In a world where automation dominates the manufacturing sector, one question persists: why aren't robots omnipresent in our daily lives? The answer lies in the intricate challenges of bridging the gap between humans and machines. While robots thrive in structured environments, the unpredictability and complexity of human behavior pose significant hurdles to seamless integration.&nbsp;In Robotican's recent work, we have developed a new way for humans to interact with service robots. A person is talking to a robot and command it to perform series of tasks a spoken language. Such a command can be: "Go forward up until the end of the hallway, enter the room in front of you, ask the doctor to give you the examination files, and come back here". The robot uses a Speech-To-Text engine, to write the command in text, then it applies a specially trained LLM (Large Language Model) to divide the command into sub-tasks. In our example the sub-tasks will be: "move forward, enter the room, ask the doctor, go back".&nbsp; The robot start performing the sub-tasks according to the required order. &nbsp;While moving the robot uses it cameras to "see" the environment in front of it. The frame from this camera goes into an LVM (Large Visual Model) which receives a photo and output text. When the way is clear this LVM will output "move forward", and an action will be: send the robot a navigation way point 10 meters ahead". When say, in our example, a group of people are standing in front of the robot blocking the way. Then the LVM will output "People are blocking the way", and the action will be "ask them to let me pass through". &nbsp;Then a Text-To-Speech engine will say "Excuse me, I'm a robot with an important task. May I please pass through? Thank you.” Then the robot pass and continues its task. Unveiling the Future: Human-Robot Interaction Revolutionizes Social Navigation Using AI and Deep Learning

Imagine being a passenger in a self-driving car as the vehicle starts veering off the road. It’s not a faulty sensor causing the dangerous situation — it’s a cyberattack. Hackers can access the deep learning (DL) neural networks at the heart of the vehicle’s computer system, compromising the safety of its passengers, as well as other drivers and pedestrians.&nbsp;Stopping such cyberattacks requires understanding them first, but this can be challenging. Finding a computing system’s exact deep neural network has many roadblocks. They are often proprietary and, therefore, inaccessible to investigators without considerable legal intervention. Another common problem is that they are updated frequently, making it difficult for investigating researchers to access the most current network iteration. But a new tool from Georgia Tech could unlock the mysterious malware on myriad neural networks in everything from self-driving cars to the IMDB entertainment database. AI Psychiatry (AiP) is a postmortem cybersecurity forensic tool that uses artificial intelligence to recover the exact models a compromised machine runs on and discover where the fatal error occurred.“We trust self-driving cars with our lives and ChatGPT with our careers, but when those systems fail, how are we going to investigate them?” said <a href="https://saltaformaggio.ece.gatech.edu/">Brendan Saltaformaggio</a>, an associate professor with joint appointments in the School of <a href="https://scp.cc.gatech.edu/">&nbsp;Cybersecurity and Privacy</a> and the School of <a href="https://www.ece.gatech.edu/">Electrical and Computer Engineering</a> (ECE).AiP can recover the original DL model on both the local network’s memory and the graphics processing unit that trains the network. It can accomplish this without any specific knowledge of the model’s framework, platform, or version. Instead, it recreates the model using what&nbsp;<a>Saltaformaggio</a> refers to as “clues,” or common components in all neural networks. These include weights, biases, shapes, and layers from the model’s memory image — a frozen set of the bits and bytes operating when the model is running normally. The memory image is crucial because it enables AiP to compare it with the model post-attack.“These models often refine their information as they go, based on their current environment, so an attack might happen as a result of an attacker poisoning the information a particular model is learning,” said David Oygenblik, an ECE Ph.D. student. “We determined that a memory image would capture all those changes that occur during a runtime.”\Once the model is recovered, AiP can run it on another device, letting investigators test it thoroughly to determine where the flaws lie. AiP has been tested with different versions of both popular machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow and PyTorch) and datasets (CIFAR-10, LISA, and IMDB). It successfully recovered and rehosted 30 models with 100% accuracy.&nbsp;“Before our research, you couldn't go to the cyber ‘crime scene’ and find clues because there was no technique available to do that,” Saltaformaggio said. “That's what we are pioneering in the cyber forensics lab right now — techniques to get that evidence out of a crime scene.”Tools like AiP will allow cyber investigators to see the whole picture immediately. Solving cybercrimes can help prevent future ones, from safeguarding a user’s data to keeping a car on the road.&nbsp;

New tool AI Psychiatry recovers compromised deep-learning models so researchers can understand what went wrong.

Cornell engineers have come up with a solution to a tricky problem: where to install charging stations for electric vehicles so they’re convenient for drivers and profitable for investors.Without abundant and well-placed charging stations, consumers will purchase fewer electric vehicles. Without enough electric vehicle owners, publicly available charging stations won’t be profitable; that means there will be fewer of them.“Improving charging-station infrastructure is essentially the chicken-and-the-egg problem,” said co-author&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cee.cornell.edu/faculty-directory/h-oliver-gao">Oliver Gao</a>, the Howard Simpson 1942 Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell Engineering.The research team found that in urban settings, installing an equal mix of two different kinds of stations – one that charges at a medium speed and another that charges more quickly – and distributing them strategically increases the chances that drivers will use them. And that in turn improves the profitability for investors by 50% to 100%, compared to current random placement strategies.The research, “<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0306261924013588">Bayesian Optimization for Battery Electric Vehicle Charging Station Placement by Agent-Based Demand Simulation</a>,” published Aug. 9 in Applied Energy.“Placing publicly available charging stations around cities sounds like a simple thing, but mathematically, it’s actually very hard,” said lead author Yeuchen Sophia Liu, Ph.D. ’22, an operations researcher in Gao’s laboratory.That’s because simple models don’t allow for the complexity of thousands of possible driver decisions, Liu said, not to mention factors like traffic and road characteristics.So the team reached back six decades to use Bayesian optimization, a mathematics strategy that uses past attempts at optimization to inform each subsequent attempt. That results in a much faster and productive analysis. It has become popular in machine learning algorithms.“The Bayesian optimization model algorithm allows us to simulate millions of individual behaviors, while at the same time, find answers efficiently and quickly,” Liu said.The team set up an algorithm that used Bayesian optimization to analyze data from the Atlanta region, home to about 6 million people. They studied the behavior of 30,000 vehicles on more than 113,000 simulated trips, forecasting a variety of commuter traffic patterns.The algorithm found an optimal placement using only 2% of the runtime of existing benchmark methods. “This enables the use of the algorithm on a more complex, real-world scale,” Liu said.The team found that medium speed “level-2” commercial charging stations and direct-current, fast-charging “DCFC” stations serve different needs. Drivers who park for 20 minutes – while running into a grocery store, for example – are likely to choose fast charging spots. But if someone is going to work and parking for several hours, the driver will likely select the level-2 station.In addition, a sensitivity analysis demonstrated that factors such as the size of the battery electric vehicle market, charging preferences and charging price have significant impacts on the optimal placement and profitability of an electric vehicle charging infrastructure project.The findings have important implications, Liu said. In the U.S., according to the paper, eight states have adopted California’s Zero Emission Vehicle program mandate to have at least 3.3 million zero-emission light-duty vehicles – replacing carbon combustion engine cars – on the road by 2025.“Economically strategic placement of charging stations could play a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to zero-emission vehicles,” Liu said.In addition to Liu and Gao, co-authors are Mohammad Tayarani, a visiting scientist in Gao’s lab, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cheme.cornell.edu/faculty-directory/fengqi-you">Fengqi You</a>, the Roxanne E. and Michael J. In his first year at Penn State Berks, he took an engineering class that would shift his priorities — and launch a startup that has given him clear goals for a future in architectural engineering.&nbsp;“At the end of the semester, there was a competition for sustainable energy charging. So my team pitched an idea to put solar panels on the side of a building, and it powered an electric-vehicle charging station,” Smith said. “We didn’t win that competition, but the four of us continued working on the idea as an independent study.”&nbsp;The team went back to the drawing board and focused on research. They started talking to electric vehicle customers through a program focused on customer discovery, Smith said, and the input they collected helped them to rework their ideas for charging ports.&nbsp;“We did a satisfaction survey, and everyone who could charge at home was extremely satisfied,” Smith said. “But in apartment buildings, 60% of people were satisfied, because they're always butting heads with their neighbor for charging stations or they had to charge on their way to work. It’s just a complete headache.”&nbsp;<aside data-testid="quote-inline"><blockquote>“We hope we give people, the business owners and the apartment complex owners, something that’s feasible to install. They see the financial payback, and people can charge the car quickly at home.”- Jonathan Smith,&nbsp;Penn State student, Streamline Charging CEO</blockquote></aside>Current charging stations can cost as much as $8,000 to install, according to Smith, but they have a limited reach. Codes and regulations restrict their charging cables to 25 feet in length, which means they can only service one or two parking spaces each. In buildings like apartment complexes, that limits the number of people and spaces that can use the stations.&nbsp;Smith and his team used their research to create a possible solution: smaller, mounted charging stations, which can slide on a mount to cover as many as five parking spaces. The installation process could be cheaper, he said, and less disruptive for the property.&nbsp;“We hope we give people, the business owners and the apartment complex owners, something that’s feasible to install,” Smith said. “They see the financial payback, and people can charge the car quickly at home. During the spring 2024 semester, they won $5,000 from a competition that will go toward building the first prototype model. The team has grown from the original four-person crew to anywhere from 10-15 people depending on the semester and what they need to accomplish.&nbsp;Their startup, Streamline Charging, also has won about $45,000 in funding from national grants, Smith said. The LLC was <a href="https://www.psu.edu/news/invent-penn-state/story/six-student-startups-compete-30000-incu-competition/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">a finalist in the 2024 Inc.U Competition</a> from Invent Penn State, <a href="https://www.psu.edu/news/berks/story/student-team-developing-ev-charging-stations-receives-awards-and-recognition/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">winning $10,000</a>. It also <a href="https://www.psu.edu/news/berks/story/penn-state-berks-students-receive-student-enterprise-award-funding/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">received additional financial support</a> from the Flemming Creativity, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development (CEED) Center earlier this year through the Student Enterprise Awards, and were part of the <a href="https://www.psu.edu/news/berks/story/penn-state-berks-student-startup-received-venturewell-e-team-program-grant/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">2023 summer cohort of VentureWell Accelerator E-Team program</a>.&nbsp;Smith serves as CEO for the company, and the experience has opened up options for his future as he starts looking beyond graduation. The financial opportunities through Invent Penn State, alongside <a href="https://www.psu.edu/news/berks/story/berks-student-team-developing-ev-charging-stations-receives-national-recognition/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Happy Valley LaunchBox programs like the Fast Track Accelerator</a>, have been instrumental in the company’s success, he said.&nbsp;“We’ve had so many professors and people to help us and coach us along the way,” Smith said. “I knew we wanted to make this a business, but we had no idea how to do that. Without LaunchBox, without support from Penn State Berks, we never would have been able to get as far as we have. It’s really exciting that Penn State was able to foster that.”&nbsp;Smith said a prototype is set up at Penn State Berks, and the company is working to install the first fully market-ready version in State College to show appreciation for the support they’ve gotten at the University.&nbsp;That support also includes guidance from Berks professor Kathy Hauser, who ran the first engineering course where Smith first started to develop this idea. Hauser has continued to mentor the team through independent study courses, helping them to implement their ideas.&nbsp;The project was a learning experience for the students, Hauser said, showing them how to navigate real-world business needs and hurdles. But it’s also been a chance for her to learn and try new strategies for her classes.&nbsp;“This project started out almost as an experiment,” Hauser said. “It was this weird kind of thing because it wasn't undergraduate research. It was a chance to expand upon a project with first-year students who really don't have engineering backgrounds.”&nbsp;Typically, Hauser works with third- and fourth-year students to form teams for competitions and business concepts. Because these students are in the midst of wrapping up their academic degrees, they don’t have as many opportunities to hone their idea and pitch.&nbsp;“So we wondered if it was possible to put a team of freshman together and let them explore their own projects, then enter competitions as juniors with a developed idea,” Hauser said.&nbsp;Hauser used her entry-level engineering course, EDSGN 100, as a chance to find teams of first-year students and figure out those ideas. During Smith’s time in the class, there was a specific task to address. A sponsor wanted teams to develop a charging station specifically for Penn State Berks.&nbsp;<aside data-testid="quote-inline"><blockquote>“The reality of it is, if you come up with something, Penn State will help you do it right. Penn State can be very supportive.”- Kathy Hauser,&nbsp;professor, Penn State Berks</blockquote></aside>But Hauser said Smith and his team ended up pursuing their own ideas outside those parameters. They looked at the automotive industry and data connected to the rollout of electric vehicles to determine what was working and what wasn’t, with a broader focus than just designing something that would work at their campus. Hauser gave them the space to pursue that, instead.&nbsp;“That was what we then shifted to, very early in the semester,” Hauser said. “I said, ‘The reality of it is, if you come up with something, Penn State will help you do it right. Penn State can be very supportive.’”&nbsp;Hauser has continued to guide Smith and his team through five semesters of developing and refining an idea that excites them — the movable charging station they’re now working to assemble. The team has changed over time as students dropped out or joined up with the project, Hauser said, but the project hasn’t lost steam.&nbsp;“I teach freshmen, predominantly, and I generally only see them that first year. The only ones I really get to know are my advisees,” Hauser said. “It's been entirely different to continue with these students over three years and really get to know them on a much more personal basis. That's been really fun.”&nbsp;The goal, she said, has always been to give Smith and his team the kind of valuable experience that would serve them well in the future. But the success of the Streamline Charging project has been incredible, she said.&nbsp;“If you want to get an internship by your second year, this was a good class to take. That's all I wanted. Anything else that comes out of it is just kind of the icing on the cake,” Hauser said. “But this team has had a lot of icing on their cake.”&nbsp;Hauser has had other cohorts and teams that came together after Smith’s group, but they haven’t been able to propel a project to the same heights — whether because it didn’t align with their majors or because they didn’t have enough time to commit to it. A new group now has potential, and she’s hoping that Smith’s team has created a path that other teams can start to follow to success.&nbsp;“When you see them latch onto what you taught them or get excited about what you're passionate about, you're really proud of those moments,” Hauser said. “This is why I like teaching. He’s also had the chance to connect with other Penn Staters willing to help him along the way.&nbsp;“In architectural engineering, we have a huge alumni network. That's where I met a lot of the people who have talked with us about growing this into something more,” Smith said. “We have so many people that really want to see us succeed.”&nbsp;Penn State also has assisted with patents and licensing, Smith said, offering students a chance for real benefit from the work they do.&nbsp;“Right now, I'm trying to talk to manufacturers to build the final station. We can look to raise more money soon and, when I graduate, I might be able to work on this full time,” Smith said. “Honestly, it's so much fun. I have an opportunity to decide for myself what to do with my career and my ideas.”&nbsp;

Building a flexible and affordable electric-vehicle charging station

As you might recall from <a href="https://cypherrobotics.com/2024/10/17/cypher-robotics-puts-captis-on-the-global-stage-at-gitex-global-2024-in-dubai/?et_fb=1&PageSpeed=off" target="_blank">this post</a>, Cypher Robotics and its <a href="https://indrorobotics.ca/cypher-robotics-announces-captis-a-new-solution-for-industrial-scanning/" target="_blank">Captis</a> cycle-counting/inventory management solution recently attended the huge <a href="https://www.gitex.com/" target="_blank">GITEX GLOBAL 2024</a> event in Dubai. It’s the world’s largest technology and AI exhibition, with some 200,000 attendees. It was a *huge* show.But a lot of the work – and the opportunities – for both Cypher Robotics and InDro Robotics (which incubated Cypher and has a technology agreement with the company) took place away from the show floor. Cypher Robotics CEO and InDro Vice President Peter King spent much of his time in high-level meetings with executives from five of the largest companies in the United Arab Emirates.“These were C-Suite level meetings, where we were able to learn more about what these companies do – and discuss how both InDro and Cypher can offer solutions that could benefit them,” says King.These aren’t companies where you can simply call and ask for a meeting with high-level executives. There needs to be a catalyst to facilitate such discussions.And there was: The Government of Canada; specifically, the Canadian Consulate in Dubai.Below: Cypher Robotics CEO Peter King on the floor at GITEX GLOBAL 2024. Sometimes, there are large “Team Canada Trade Missions” which are led by a Minister and often covered by media. With these missions, there’s a specific push on the Indo-Pacific region. On other occasions, however, the government pulls together smaller groups with a very specific focus. Months before GITEX GLOBAL 2024 was to take the world stage, planning began for a mission in Dubai that would take place the same week.Government officials identified five Canadian firms in the Canadian high-tech sector it felt might be a fit for the UAE market. InDro Robotics was invited to participate – and was the only company among those five from the robotics sector.“They identified that our solutions could be highlighted in Dubai – not only for trade reasons, but also to help solve some really hard problems,” says Peter King. “We were obviously really pleased to be one of a small handful of technology companies to be on the federal government’s radar.”Canada’s Consul General in Dubai, H.E. Tracy Reynolds, was at the helm of this program and coordinated a series of meetings with “the UAE’s most influential business and technology leaders,” reads a Government of Canada document outlining the program.“Consul General Reynolds will lead a two-day outreach program that will allow selected Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) clients to pitch their products and solutions to Dubai’s conglomerates, which are considered to be major buyers of ICT products and solutions. The meetings will also allow the delegation to learn about the latest technologies being adopted by these organizations,” it adds.<h3> </h3><h3 id="isPasted">Why UAE?</h3>Though historically an oil-driven economy, the United Arab Emirates has diversified greatly in recent years. It has evolved, according to the CIA’s World FactBook, “into a trade-oriented logistics and supply chain leader (with) strong foreign direct investment orientation; building trade and investment ties through partnership agreements…” The UAE Gross Domestic Product is the fourth highest in the Middle East (after Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel), with an estimated USD 719.733 billion GDP in 2023.In Dubai, the skyline has been utterly transformed over the past few decades. It’s home to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and other ultra-modern architecture. Known also for its luxury shopping and high-end autos, Dubai has also embraced technology in recent years. In fact, the local police count Tesla Cybertrucks among their fleet.Dubai has never been as dependent on oil as the other six Emirates that comprise the UAE – and Dubai has led the way in the UAE in terms of economic diversification. According to Wikipedia, “Oil production, which once accounted for 50% of Dubai’s gross domestic product, contributes less than 1% today. In 2018, wholesale and retail trade represented 26% of the total GDP; transport and logistics, 12%; banking, insurance activities and capital markets, 10%; manufacturing, 9%; real estate, 7%; construction, 6%; tourism, 5%. The International Herald Tribune described it as ‘centrally-planned free-market capitalism’.”In other words, Dubai – and the wider UAE – are a significant and growing global marketplace.Below: The Dubai Skyline at night. Being on the ground, Canadian&nbsp;Consul General&nbsp;Tracy Reynolds,&nbsp;Deputy Consul General Anthony Finch and Trade Commissioner&nbsp;Arun Basandai have an insider’s vantage point into the key economic players in Dubai and the UAE.&nbsp;And so, over the course of two days, they accompanied representatives of the five invited Canadian companies to five different high-level meetings.The first was with one of the largest real estate developers in the entire UAE. Remember the earlier reference to the Burj Khalifa? This company owns it. In addition to real estate, its diverse portfolio includes&nbsp;retail, hospitality, and&nbsp;leisure. The firm’s Executive Director and its Head of Information Technology attended the meeting.We don’t want to get into the details, but it was an excellent discussion – which included how solutions from both InDro Robotics and Cypher Robotics might be useful to that firm.&nbsp;From there, it was off to a massive global investment company that has been a major driver of Dubai’s spectacular growth. It’s involved with 10 sectors,&nbsp;including real estate, hospitality, leisure&nbsp;&amp; entertainment, media, ICT, design, education, retail, manufacturing, and&nbsp;logistics and science. It owns hotels, parks, resorts, a huge arena, multiple large retail outlets – and is also involved in multiple projects to accelerate Dubai into a fully Smart City. There were fruitful discussions there as well.Meeting three was with one of the largest retailers in Dubai and the entire UAE with an emphasis on the fashion and lifestyle industry. On the food and beverage side, it runs multiple name brand franchises throughout the UAE and is the distributor/retailer of major fashion brands. It’s a huge company with a massive rolling inventory across several sectors. As with the previous meetings, all five Canadian technology companies had a chance to discuss their offerings.&nbsp;<h3>And There Was More…</h3>Once again, it was C-suite meetings with the full support of senior Consulate staff. The group met with the CEO and Chief Strategy and Technology Officer (CSTO) of the leading shopping mall, retail and leisure company across the Middle East, Africa and Asia. It owns and operates 27 major shopping malls, multiple hotels, cinemas, etc. and has assets in excess of USD 18 billion and 44,000 employees.The final meeting was with “a multinational retail franchise operator of 70 brands in 20 countries.” Those brands include Starbucks, Chipotle and Cheesecake Factory. The company runs hotels and major retail outlets with names you’d recognize. The company’s Chief Strategy and Digital Officer attended this meeting, and was able to learn about solutions offered by all five Canadian technology companies.“These meetings were a tremendous opportunity to learn not only about what these leading UAE companies do, but also explore some of the challenges they face with operations at that scale,” says King. “There was significant interest in solutions from both InDro and Cypher – and I’m confident these were just the first of many conversations to come.”Below: The Cypher Robotics cycle-counting and RFID scanning Captis, which can operate autonomously for five hours and also capture precision digital twins. The electric grid is not yet ready to support the EV influx, and unaddressed capacity limitations could threaten the future of the EV industry.&nbsp;<img src="https://images.wevolver.com/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3ZXZvbHZlci1wcm9qZWN0LWltYWdlcyIsImtleSI6ImZyb2FsYS8xNzI5MDM4NTYxNjgxLWV2LWZlYXR1cmUtMS5qcGciLCJlZGl0cyI6eyJyZXNpemUiOnsid2lkdGgiOjk1MCwiZml0IjoiY292ZXIifX19" style="width: 100%px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">David Taylor, professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE); Kartik Sastry, a recent ECE Ph.D. graduate; and Michael Leamy, Woodruff Professor and director of Graduate Studies in the School of Mechanical Engineering.Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a device to help avoid grid overload: a revolutionary EV smart-charging system.&nbsp;Their optimization-based approach would not only help reduce grid stress but also enable users to customize the charging process and minimize cost, prioritize the use of carbon-free energy, or adjust the charging speed. The technology might even help promote the EV industry.&nbsp;“The EV revolution is happening so quickly that electrical utilities will find it difficult and costly to update the grid fast enough to accommodate these vehicles,” said <a href="https://research.gatech.edu/node/36005" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="df17f5fe-cbc3-4e3c-86ce-928e3a540089" data-entity-substitution="canonical">Michael J. Leamy</a>, Woodruff Professor and director of Graduate Studies in the <a href="https://www.me.gatech.edu/">George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering</a>. “We wanted to investigate a way of smart charging that considers EVs as they converge on the electric grid, which we already know is near its maximum capacity. We need to buy time for the grid operators so they aren’t overwhelmed when more EVs enter the market.”<h2 id="isPasted">Taking a Load Off (the Grid)</h2>In the southeastern U.S., during the summertime, power use peaks from late afternoon to early evening. By then, the heat of the sun has warmed up homes and buildings, and people have cranked up their air conditioners. This is also when most people come home from work and plug in their EVs, which immediately start charging. When plugged in, an EV can easily be the most significant consumer of power in a home.<img src="https://images.wevolver.com/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3ZXZvbHZlci1wcm9qZWN0LWltYWdlcyIsImtleSI6ImZyb2FsYS8xNzI5MDM4NTk2OTQ5LWV2LWZlYXR1cmUtMy5qcGciLCJlZGl0cyI6eyJyZXNpemUiOnsid2lkdGgiOjk1MCwiZml0IjoiY292ZXIifX19" style="width: 100%px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The smart charger minimizes stress on the electric grid by using algorithms to distribute charging over time.“A bunch of EVs charging during the peak power load can be problematic for utilities, exacerbating electricity demand and overloading the grid,” said <a href="https://kartik.ece.gatech.edu/">Kartik Sastry</a>, a recent Ph.D. graduate in the <a href="https://ece.gatech.edu/">School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)</a> and co-inventor of the technology. “But you don’t need to start charging as soon as you come home. In most cases, there’s ample time overnight to fully charge electric vehicles.”&nbsp;The team set out to address the issue of grid overload by taking advantage of overnight surplus charging time. They developed cutting-edge optimization algorithms to distribute charging over time, thereby minimizing grid stresses while offering benefits to consumers.&nbsp;Rather than charging at full speed as soon as an EV is plugged in, the team’s smart-charging algorithms allow for gradual charging, or charging at several intervals over time rather than all at once. The algorithms also decrease the maximum power draw of a home during charging, achieving what the researchers call “peak shaving.”&nbsp;The algorithm itself plans the charging and when it will occur, based on the state of the grid and consumer preferences. The system also makes these decisions without the need for any centralized control, and without communicating with other vehicles in the neighborhood or city.&nbsp;“By using random timing and predictions of household power usage, our algorithm can effectively distribute the load,” said <a href="https://research.gatech.edu/node/36240" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="8797f559-5d41-4aea-afa6-46ef49f0b6e2" data-entity-substitution="canonical">David G. Using an app the team designed, a consumer can control four different facets of charging: cost, carbon-free energy, speed, and battery health. The app’s slider widgets allow a user to weigh their preferences for each; based on the user’s selections, the algorithm determines how best to charge the vehicle while minimizing grid impact.&nbsp;For example, to charge their vehicle quickly, a user would move the charging-speed slider all the way to the right. Prioritizing carbon-free charging, on the other hand, programs the charger to only charge the car when renewable resources such as wind or solar are available on the grid. Choosing to charge at the lowest cost would prompt the system to charge at low-demand times based on a utility’s price schedule, allowing the user to avoid any demand charges.<h2 id="isPasted">Driving Forward</h2><img src="https://images.wevolver.com/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJ3ZXZvbHZlci1wcm9qZWN0LWltYWdlcyIsImtleSI6ImZyb2FsYS8xNzI5MDM4NjgwOTY5LWV2LWZlYXR1cmUtMi5qcGciLCJlZGl0cyI6eyJyZXNpemUiOnsid2lkdGgiOjk1MCwiZml0IjoiY292ZXIifX19" style="width: 100%px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">The team plans to demonstrate how their smart-charging algorithms can reduce costs for entire fleets of electric vehicles.The team has published several research articles about the project in major journals. They have also built prototype hardware, completed charging case studies with individual EVs, and submitted a patent for the technology.&nbsp;Expanding beyond the system’s applications for individual consumers, the team has also developed this technology to function in commercial settings. They hope to collaborate with an EV charging station company and a public school system that uses EV buses to demonstrate how their algorithms automatically reduce fleet charging costs.&nbsp;The goal, Leamy says, is for companies to license their smart-charging algorithm technology.The researchers are also reaching out to auto companies to have their technology incorporated into EVs themselves, which would allow users to set their charging preferences right from their dashboard.&nbsp;“We hope to demonstrate that smart charging is feasible on a large scale — and also measure the benefits of doing so,” Leamy said. “We plan to show how much money consumers, companies, and school systems can save with smart charging rather than simply charging in an ad hoc fashion.”“We anticipate a significant uptick in EV adoption, which will lead to higher demand on the grid,” Sastry said. “To protect the grid and help the EV industry thrive, we must accommodate these EVs in a smart way, and that’s what we hope to achieve.”

Instead, a combination of renewable electricity, renewable hydrogen, and e-fuels (power-to-X) is considered essential for meeting future decarbonization targets cost-effectively.<h2 dir="ltr">Energy Carriers for Sustainable Mobility&nbsp;</h2>As the Dutch automotive industry strives to achieve climate-neutral mobility, the focus has shifted towards identifying and utilizing the most effective energy carriers. The integration of these carriers is essential to meet the ambitious emission reduction targets and support the development of a robust and sustainable transportation ecosystem. Today, three primary energy carriers are central to the Dutch automotive industry’s sustainable mobility strategy:<ol><li dir="ltr">Renewable Electricity: This is the most promising energy carrier for two-wheelers, light electric vehicles (LEVs), and passenger cars. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are increasingly prevalent, driven by advancements in battery technology that enhance range and efficiency. In urban distribution and smaller trucks and buses, BEVs offer significant environmental benefits by reducing local emissions. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are also expected to play a significant role, particularly in areas where longer ranges and quicker refueling are required. The infrastructure for renewable electricity, including charging stations, is rapidly expanding to support the growing number of electric vehicles on the road.</li></ol><ol start="2"><li dir="ltr">Renewable Hydrogen: Hydrogen fuel cells and/or hydrogen engines are critical for applications where batteries are less practical, such as long-haul transport and heavy-duty trucks. Hydrogen offers a high energy density and quick refueling times, making it suitable for vehicles that require long-range capabilities and minimal downtime. Hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE), in particular, provide a viable solution for these sectors, offering the necessary power and range while producing minimal emissions at the point of use with a competitive TCO. “Hydrogen combustion engines are essential for decarbonizing heavy-duty transport, particularly where battery solutions may not be sufficient,” says Angelique Berden, Marketing Director at Westport Fuel Systems, an alternative fuel technology provider. “The ability to leverage new or existing internal combustion engine infrastructure while drastically reducing emissions offers a fast and practical pathway to decarbonization.” The development of hydrogen infrastructure, including production and refueling stations, is essential to support the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.</li></ol><ol start="3"><li dir="ltr">E-fuels (Power-to-X):&nbsp;These synthetic fuels, produced using renewable energy, are essential for specific use cases where electrification or hydrogen is not feasible. E-fuels can be used in existing internal combustion engines with minimal modifications, providing a practical solution for reducing emissions from the current vehicle fleet. They offer the flexibility of being compatible with existing fuel distribution infrastructure, making them a valuable component in the transition to sustainable mobility. E-fuels are particularly beneficial for applications such as aviation and maritime transport, where electrification poses significant technical challenges.</li></ol><h3 dir="ltr">Battery Technology and Infrastructure&nbsp;</h3>Advancements in battery technology are crucial to supporting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Current developments focus on extending the range of batteries to cover distances of 300 to 800 kilometers, making electric vehicles more practical for a broader range of applications, from daily commuting to long-haul transportation.To enhance battery performance and longevity, researchers are exploring new materials and innovative designs.
