A struggle in most industrial facilities is that legacy location technologies simply can’t provide high precision in complex indoor environments. For example, operators frequently find that GPS signals can’t penetrate dense warehouse structures or multistory hospital wings. While Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can deliver basic proximity metrics, it lacks the fine-grained accuracy needed for high-stakes asset management.

Using Qorvo Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, engineers can overcome these constraints. UWB technology helps create a connectivity layer that handles both high-speed Wi-Fi data transfer and high-precision location awareness.

Pulse-Based Time of Flight Physics

UWB is a time-of-flight technology, meaning that it measures the exact time it takes short radio pulses to travel between a transmitter and a receiver.

A key reason UWB achieves such high accuracy is its 500 MHz signal bandwidth. Because a receiver must sample a signal at least twice its bandwidth, wider bandwidth means finer time resolution, and finer time resolution means finer distance resolution. At 500 MHz, UWB resolves to approximately 15 centimeters, compared to roughly 1 meter for 80 MHz Wi-Fi Fine Timing Measurement (FTM) and several meters for RSSI-based systems. This gives UWB a structural accuracy advantage of five to ten times greater than the next best wireless ranging option.

Most time-of-flight technologies suffer from multipath reflections, where signals bounce off surfaces and create interference that typically degrades accuracy in other wireless standards. Qorvo solves this issue with UWB transmitters that emit extremely short 500 MHz-wide pulses centered around the 8 GHz frequency band. The 2 ns duration of these pulses allows sensors to distinguish the direct-path signal from reflected signals, effectively mitigating this issue.

And, by calculating the time of flight instead of relying on signal strength as in other location technologies, UWB’s measurements are immune to the fading and fluctuations common in industrial zones. Designers can then use these physical layer properties to maintain a stable location lock even when the line of sight is partially obstructed by environmental clutter.

The Synergy of UWB and Wi-Fi 7

Using Qorvo-integrated SoCs, network architects can deploy UWB anchors as native components in Wi-Fi 7 access points. This integration allows teams to centralize both UWB ranging and enterprise connectivity within a single hardware footprint, regardless of the transport or backhaul used to carry RTLS data upstream. By centralizing both communication and location services this way, organizations can avoid the capital expenditure of a parallel anchor deployment. Leveraging the existing EAP footprint can significantly reduce the need for additional dedicated localization infrastructure, avoiding the hardware, installation, and cabling costs that standalone UWB anchor deployments typically require—where adding a single dedicated anchor or EAP can cost several thousand dollars in installation and cabling alone.

Qorvo's coexistence tools let the UWB system share spectrum with the Wi-Fi 7 radio without packet collisions or spectral crowding, and that same high-speed wireless layer can synchronize clocks across multiple UWB anchors for nanosecond-level timing accuracy. The result is a single unified infrastructure (rather than two networks managed separately) that delivers both simpler deployment and stronger real-time performance.

Equally impactful is the expertise Qorvo has in RF filter design. As Wi-Fi 6 GHz and UWB 8 GHz channels occupy adjacent spectrum, high-performance filtering lets both radio chains coexist within the same access point enclosure without degrading each other.

The Standards and Ecosystems for Interoperability

UWB ranging between tags and anchors can be implemented in several ways. Some approaches are fully proprietary to a given vendor, and others are built on open standards that ensure interoperability across devices and platforms.

Qorvo aligned its hardware with leading standards bodies to give organizations greater long-term flexibility. Specifically, Qorvo hardware adheres to FiRa Consortium standards, a global organization that provides protocols for engineers to easily build interoperable systems. This compliance matters because it means UWB components from different vendors can communicate and rank distances consistently, freeing organizations from single-vendor lock-in and letting them mix hardware as deployments scale.

To protect these interactions, Qorvo provides a distance-bounding protocol that meets IEEE 802.15.4z requirements, preventing sophisticated relay attacks and spoofing. By precisely measuring the distance between devices, the bounding protocol unlocks applications in secure authentication and proximity-based automation that were previously hard to achieve.

Beyond FiRA, Qorvo works closely with omlox. As a primary standard for industrial locating, omlox provides a vendor-neutral interface that allows engineers to integrate various positioning technologies into a single, cohesive network. Enterprise access point vendors increasingly prefer standardized ranging frameworks like FiRa and omlox—with which Qorvo chips fully comply—as demonstrated by real-world deployments such as Cisco Spaces' FiRa-compliant UWB ranging and Juniper Networks' omlox location services. With greater interoperability and design freedom, organizations can reduce per-unit costs as they scale their location services.

Infrastructure-Free Scaling

Beyond ease of deployment, UWB is compelling for the return on investment that follows when 20 cm accuracy replaces coarser alternatives.

First, designers can simply add standard Wi-Fi 7 access points to their existing network infrastructure to significantly expand coverage across locations. That means that with integrated UWB, teams can avoid the labor-intensive process of running new power and data cables, which is typically required for standalone anchors. Standard Wi-Fi planning tools such as Ekahau and Hamina are already integrating UWB ranging into their Wi-Fi installation products, enabling designers to use GPS and UWB data together to simplify access point placement and orientation during installation.

With automated placement capabilities, teams can create high-performance network designs that adapt dynamically to changes in the physical environment. Once established, these systems can support tens of thousands of individual tags within a single facility without overwhelming the radio frequency environment.

Further, low-power UWB tags can operate for years on battery, which significantly reduces the long-term maintenance requirements for large-scale deployments. With inherent power efficiency, these tags help engineers track massive inventories. Meanwhile, the 20 cm accuracy they provide—offering room-level precision that enables systems to distinguish exactly which side of a wall an asset is on—unlocks asset-recovery, geofencing, and workflow automation use cases that coarser location technologies simply can’t support.

Enterprise Use Cases

Optimizing Smart Factory Workflows

Production managers can use UWB and Wi-Fi to track high-value tools and mobile assets with 20 cm accuracy to facilitate assembly line transitions.

To understand the practical value, consider a technician who needs a specific tool at an assembly station but doesn't have it. They check where it should be, ask nearby coworkers, and then visually scan the floor. This process can easily consume 10 to 20 minutes per incident.

Using UWB RTLS, the technician can instead query a location app and walk directly to the tool, resolving the search in under a minute. By eliminating this unproductive search time for an entire workforce, manufacturing teams can reduce lead times by up to 50%.

Other UWB RTLS benefits include:

Optimizing workflows by designing systems that automatically log the movement of parts through every stage of the fabrication process.

Enhancing individual safety with UWB-enabled handheld devices that provide real-time alerts when workers inadvertently approach a hazard.

Implementing geofencing protocols that automatically disable machinery if a worker enters a restricted safety zone.

In the real world, SEG Automotive used Qorvo technology to implement these tactics and successfully reallocate 15% of its workforce to higher-value tasks. Ultimately, the unified ecosystems created by Qorvo offered improved operational efficiency and personnel safety.

Advanced Healthcare Logistics

Hospital staff can use integrated RTLS to monitor the real-time locations of medical devices and patients. For example, nurses can use UWB tracking to locate the nearest available emergency equipment in seconds rather than minutes.

Qorvo's Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Source: Qorvo

Beyond equipment tracking, facility designers can use UWB to create comprehensive patient safety systems that monitor movements to prevent falls or unauthorized departures from specialized care units. Similarly, technical teams can use location data to analyze asset movement patterns and identify bottlenecks in patient intake and discharge procedures.

Conclusion

The convergence of UWB and Wi-Fi 7 is a major change in how organizations approach indoor spatial awareness. A key element driving this shift is the support for UWB-based indoor navigation directly on standard smartphones. By combining consumer smartphone adoption (allowing workers or patients to locate tools or offices with standard iOS or Android devices instead of relying on expensive third-party hardware) with integrated infrastructure deployment, organizations can deploy highly precise location systems that are both affordable and easy to scale.

As Wi-Fi 7 becomes the standard for enterprise connectivity, Qorvo's integrated UWB approach gives organizations a way to add precise location services (asset tracking and indoor navigation) without deploying separate infrastructure.

For decades, barcodes have been the default method of labeling and tracking components, tools, and medical devices. They’re simple and inexpensive to implement, and can be read by any optical scanner. But, they’re no longer sufficient to meet the requirements of modern connected systems or regulated healthcare workflows.

Today’s medical devices exchange data continuously and often operate in sealed or sterile environments where visual scanning is impractical or impossible. These devices need a smarter and more reliable form of identification that can operate inside constrained spaces, integrate into electronic assemblies, and maintain data integrity.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) offers that next step. It offers automatic data capture without human intervention, readout through packaging, and the flexibility to update information after deployment. Murata offers a comprehensive suite of miniature RFID tags that combine durability, reliability, and embedded integration to help engineers replace traditional barcodes.

RFID as a System-Level Solution

Whereas barcodes are entirely passive, RFID tags are active components!

The tag itself contains an integrated circuit, a defined memory map, and a precision-matched antenna. The reader generates an electromagnetic field that powers the tag through inductive or radiative coupling and triggers a data exchange. The tag then modulates the field to return stored information to the reader. Importantly, this process works without a direct visual path and continues to function when the tag is behind plastic, film, or non-conductive barriers.

Hospitals, labs, and pharmaceutical facilities benefit from RFID tags because they reduce contact-based scanning. A reader mounted at a workstation or production bench can detect tagged items as soon as they enter the field. Staff do not need to manipulate items individually. When integrated into surgical workflows, RFID can support automated tray verification and tool authentication. In addition, every read event is part of an electronic record, leading to more reliable documentation and greater traceability.

Murata’s 1.2 x 1.2 x 0.55 millimeter RFID tag package means that system engineers can embed them directly into a device’s housing or even mold them into plastic components. When the tag becomes part of the product structure, it creates a permanent, invisible identifier that’s part of the product design. The embedded configuration also protects the tag from abrasion or contamination, especially during processes such as sterilization, transport, or mechanical assembly.

What RFID Can Do That Barcodes Cannot?

Barcodes store static information that can’t change after printing, which limits their usefulness in dynamic or regulated workflows. RFID tags, on the other hand, offer reprogrammable memory regions that store useful data like device identifiers, batch numbers, expiration dates, usage counters, and maintenance history. Engineers can update these values throughout production or use cycles without modifying the physical device, making a live data store inside every tagged component.

RFID also eliminates line-of-sight constraints! Barcode-based scanners need a clean path between the label and the sensor. This becomes particularly challenging when operating in sterile or sealed environments. RFID can operate through polymer films and non-metallic housings, letting readers identify items inside enclosures without compromising containment. Facilities can therefore maintain sterility and process integrity without compromising an automated workflow.

For higher throughput operations, RFID supports multi-tag interrogation in ways that barcodes can’t. With RFID, a single reader can detect a full set of instruments or consumables at once. Surgical teams verify tray contents in seconds, or pharmaceutical operators can track vials in batches rather than scanning each unit. The system simply records every item automatically to lower labor requirements and reduce counting errors that occur during manual optical scanning.

Finally, RFID offers major durability advantages! Barcodes tend to degrade under abrasion, chemical exposure, or thermal cycling, and the resulting surface wear can render the label unusable. In contrast, Murata’s RFID tags operate independently of surface conditions because the antenna and memory reside inside a sealed microelectronic package. Tags can maintain communication through mechanical shock or temperature fluctuations.

Enabling Authentication and Traceability

Beyond tracking, RFID brings authentication into the device ecosystem. In a surgical setup, for example, the base unit of an electrosurgical tool can use RFID to verify that a disposable tip or accessory is genuine before allowing operation. The system can check the stored identifier against an authorized list and enable operation only when the accessory matches the expected profile. This type of workflow effectively prevents the use of dangerous, unvalidated, or counterfeit components.

Murata’s RFID tags can store unique identifiers that support anti-counterfeit workflows. Manufacturers can simply program these identifiers during production, and the values become a permanent form of authenticity. Even if a counterfeit accessory mimics the mechanical design of a genuine part, the RFID system rejects the device because the identifier does not match the trusted database.

The company’s tags also offer a secure memory structure that helps manufacturers program unique identifiers at production while still maintaining updatability throughout its lifetime. Facilities can update relevant fields during packaging, distribution, or deployment, and each update becomes part of the device’s digital history. In that way, RFID systems can maintain full transparency and a consistent chain of verification from production through end-of-life.

Built on Murata’s RF Expertise

Reliable RFID performance depends on predictable antenna behavior, effective coupling with the reader, and stable operation in the presence of nearby materials. With extensive RF engineering experience, Murata guarantees consistent RFID communication in environments where conventional tags show degraded performance.

Engineers using Murata’s tags can rely on the company’s optimized antenna structure, which is already built into the device to minimize design overhead. There’s no need for custom antenna layouts or iterative tuning cycles. The tag just performs reliably from the start. The result is less engineering overhead for system integrators who need predictable read ranges in complex environments.

Conclusion

Murata’s RFID solutions offer flexibility, durability, and intelligence that barcodes can’t match. Whether for product authentication or embedded device identification, these tags provide reliability backed by decades of Murata’s RF expertise.

Explore how Murata’s RFID tags can support your next design: murata.com/products/rfid

Bluetooth technology continues to drive wireless innovation

You might be surprised how frequently valuable assets become missing. Equipment or vehicles are often difficult to locate, or remain idle because their real-time status is unknown. And let’s not even begin about heavy machinery stuck in maintenance due to unplanned technical issues.

Apart from inefficiencies in resources-usage, fleet owners increasingly need to adhere to regulations on reporting emissions, logging driver’s hours of service, mapping state-border crossings and reporting of fuel usage.

Fleet management enables better utilization of resources and improved operations efficiency due to better insights into the location, state and usage patterns of assets, vehicles and drivers.

What is fleet management?

Fleet management involves leveraging technology to gain accurate, real-time insights into the status and performance of vehicles, (heavy) equipment and – to some extent – human behavior. Through the collection and analysis of data, fleet utilization can be optimized, downtime reduced, and overall efficiencies improved.

Whether it’s trucks, excavators, mining equipment, or rental machinery, these assets are costly, energy-intensive, and environmentally impactful. Detailed telemetry data play a crucial role in maximizing usage, reducing operational costs, improving road safety, and lowering CO₂ emissions.

How fleet management works

Vehicles by default collect onboard telematics, offering insights into their usage, inner-workings and potential issues. Telematics include diagnostics of the engine, fuel usage, emissions, and may also contain data about the driver behavior. This data can typically be accessed via an OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) port, which communicates using the standardized protocol called CAN bus. Since 2008, CAN bus has become widely adopted, driven by US regulations mandating its implementation in heavy vehicles.

A device by Bransys which connects to the vehicle’s OBD-II port

Companies like Bransys provide cellular-enabled devices that read onboard telematics, occasionally adding additional data such as GPS. The data is relayed via a cellular connection to a server where it is stored, visualized, and analyzed. Accessing this data enables fleet managers to optimize scheduling, streamline maintenance, and enhance route planning.

Typically, these devices offload data via public cellular networks using technologies like LTE-M. Increasingly, there is demand for satellite-enabled devices. Novel cellular chipsets now support direct satellite communication, enabling connectivity for vehicles operating in remote areas.

For older vehicles or equipment without an OBD-II port, external sensors are used. These sensors include accelerometers for vibration sensing, GNSS modules for location tracking, tire-pressure sensors, tank-level sensors, and temperature sensors to name a few.

Regulatory compliance through fleet technology

Fleet managers increasingly rely on digital tools to meet regulatory requirements. In the US, the ELD (Electronic Logging Device) regulation mandates that commercial drivers digitally log their Hours of Service (HOS) to enhance road safety and eliminate manual record-keeping. Similarly, Nevada’s Continuous Monitoring Program requires heavy vehicles to automatically report emissions data, eliminating the need for manual inspections.

The IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) and IRP (International Registration Plan) add further complexity, requiring fleets to track fuel usage and allocate vehicle registration fees proportionally, depending on how many miles a vehicle drives in each state or country.

Fleet management systems make compliance with these varied requirements far easier, reducing paperwork for both drivers and carriers, minimizing errors, and improving road safety.

Real-world business cases

Here are four practical examples demonstrating fleet management technology’s real-world benefits:

Case 1: Ensuring ELD compliance

Fleet operators in the US are required to comply with the ELD mandate, which enforces accurate tracking of driver hours to ensure safety and prevent overwork. By integrating ELD-compatible devices into their fleet, companies can automate the logging of engine activity, mileage, and driver behavior. This not only reduces administrative burden but also protects businesses from costly compliance penalties and improves overall fleet safety.

Case 2: Rental agencies – usage-based billing

Real-time fleet management systems enable rental agencies to charge customers based on actual usage. This wouldn’t be possible without reliable sensing, communication and data management. Companies like Bransys combine OBD-II data with additional vibration sensors to accurately track and verify operating hours, resulting in accurate invoicing and greater transparency for both rental companies and their customers.

Case 3: Nevada’s Continuous Monitoring Program

Nevada requires heavy vehicles (2008 and newer) to continuously monitor and report their emissions directly to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Connected systems that diagnose emissions via the ODB-II port, eliminate manual inspections, reduce operational disruptions, paperwork, and the risk of compliance-related penalties.

Case 4: Reducing downtime through predictive monitoring

Downtime is one of fleet management’s most costly challenges. Real-time fleet data about location, movement, tire pressure and vibration helps detect potential problems early. For instance, catching incorrect tire pressure proactively can avoid costly blowouts, improve fuel efficiency, and prevent safety hazards, significantly reducing the likelihood of unplanned downtime and operational delays.

Why this matters

Fleet management is more than dots on a map; it represents resource optimization which leads to cost savings, reduced downtime, compliance simplification, and improved sustainability. Turning telemetry data into actionable insights enables smarter, faster, and more profitable business decisions.

Fleet management solutions are more accessible and impactful than ever with today’s low-cost sensors, standardized interfaces (OBD-II and CAN bus) and seamless cellular connectivity via public networks or satellite.

Interested in learning more?

Read the Bransys case study on Fleet Management or reach out to us directly.

Ensuring the Safety of Fur Babies: The Role of GNSS in Advanced Pet Trackers

When entering the connected device market, businesses are looking for IoT solutions that can keep costs manageable, scale effectively with business demands, and keep data secure.

In particular, scaling effectively requires proper consideration for provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and analysis of the connected devices because making the wrong decisions early on can get costly later. Getting scalability right is even more critical for sensors deployed in remote and inaccessible locations.

One of our clients initially planned on building their own custom IoT solution for their remote monitored devices that are being deployed in 10 locations. While being a more affordable cost up-front, a custom, in-house solution would require our client to be responsible for all maintenance throughout a device’s lifecycle. This ongoing maintenance would mean increased resources – and increased costs, known as “tech debt”.

Our client ultimately decided on using a standard IoT framework–such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform–where they’d pay more for the development up front, but have lower operating costs in the long term. This solution also does not require specialized resources to know the technical systems.

In this post, we look at the 5 major selling features of an IoT framework for a device deployment.

1. Cradle to grave tracking of devices

Our client selected Azure for their IoT framework, using it to provision devices on the assembly line and make a first-time connection. After this, the devices can arrive up-to-date and automatically update to the latest firmware, and any calibration, configuration, or firmware changes are tracked during manufacturing as well as out in the field in an automatic, consistent, cloud-hosted way.

2. Ability to determine at-a-glance whether a device is problematic

Devices dial out to the cloud to establish connectivity, and that connectivity is tracked by Azure’s IoT system. Proactive alerts can be set if a device has not appeared online for a while or data has not been uploaded. All of this automation helps minimize downtime and data loss.

3. Continuous uploading and organization of data

The devices will upload data continuously, whenever there is a connection. The data goes into a standard cloud-hosted storage solution (blob storage) which keeps the data centralized and accessible to those who need it, while also being monitored to ensure the devices are functioning correctly. The data upload can trigger further data processing and automated pipelines that give real time insights into activity.

4. Offline (queued) updates to parameters and firmware

Devices on a standard framework don’t have to be online to queue up changes to parameters and schedule new firmware updates – they can be in storage, in transit, or in use. Businesses can adopt a “set it and forget it” mindset knowing updates will be automatically applied. This reduces additional coordination work.

5. Mass updates to the smart device’s parameters

Updates to parameters can be easily made fleet-wide, or to any subset of devices. As the product evolves, these changes can be made to optimize operation, and subsets of devices can be used as a test bed before rolling out changes to a larger number. The built-in optimization for updates helps decrease device management overhead.

Conclusion

When looking at scaling of deployments, the economics favor the standard IoT framework. By using a standard solution you’re leveraging thousands of engineering hours, other companies’ testing, and have the benefit of continued development of new features useful to (and not driven by) your business.

Think about what scale your business is going to be reaching when considering your own connectivity solution – if you plan on continuing to grow, adopting a standard solution will be the more affordable and manageable solution in the long run.

This article was originally written by Kevin Baillie, Mechatronics Designer, for the MistyWest blog.
