MOSFET Switch: How to Use a MOSFET as a Switch

<h2 id="isPasted">pSemi, a subsidiary of Murata, announced the PE566212 and PE566213</h2><p>The PE566212 and PE566213 are two 2.4 GHz front-end modules (FEMs) for Bluetooth, Zigbee and Thread devices. Each integrates a power amplifier (PA), low-noise amplifier (LNA) and RF switch on one die in UltraCMOS+, pSemi's silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process, inside a 14-lead 1.8 × 1.8 × 0.63 mm LGA.<sup>[1][2][3][4][5]</sup></p><p>The PE566212 and PE566213 transmit up to +20 dBm and receive with a 1.8 dB noise figure at 13 dB gain. The PE566212 covers Bluetooth Low Energy and Classic Basic Rate (BR); the PE566213 adds Classic's Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) at up to +12 dBm.<sup>[1][5]</sup></p><h2>Why it matters</h2><p>The PE566212 and PE566213 join pSemi's PE562212, an earlier multi-protocol FEM in the same package that also supports EDR and Wi-Fi up to MCS7 and remains in production. Against the PE562212, the PE566212 and PE566213 list slightly lower output power and higher noise figure and bypass loss (see table), while the PE566212 widens gain control from 15 dB to 22.5 dB in coarser 1.5 dB steps.<sup>[4][5][6][7]</sup></p><p>Bluetooth EDR's π/4-DQPSK and 8-DPSK payloads vary in amplitude and need a linear PA, and pSemi rates EDR below Basic Rate: +12 dBm against +20 dBm on the PE566213, and +15 dBm against +21 dBm on the PE562212.<sup>[5][7][8][9][10]</sup></p><p>Against Skyworks' SKY66114-11 and SKY66403-11 FEMs and <a href="https://www.wevolver.com/profile/nordic.semiconductor">Nordic Semiconductor</a>'s nRF21540 FEM, the pSemi parts' clearest advantage is size. Bluetooth, Zigbee and Thread front-end modules fit a +20 dBm PA, LNA and switch into 1.8 x 1.8 mm

Two New Front-End Modules for 2.4 GHz IoT Connectivity

<h2 id="isPasted">What is the announcement</h2><p>On October 7, 2026, <a href="https://www.atomicmachines.com/">Atomic Machines</a> announced PrimeSwitch PS-150, a bistable electromechanical relay designed as the metal contact in hybrid circuit breakers for 800 V DC AI data centers. Atomic Machines says PS-150 is made on the Matter Compiler, its new micro-machine manufacturing system, which builds multi-material parts with features down to single-digit microns from design files, without masks or hard tooling.<sup>[1][2]</sup> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/science/atomic-machines-ai-micro-robots.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The New York Times</a> reports the system's 13 automated machines build and test components, while engineers move parts between machines and help assemble the final device.<sup>[3]</sup> PS-150 is rated 150 A continuous with 200 µΩ on-resistance and opens to 1,500 V galvanic isolation in 50 µs, Atomic Machines says; it is sampling to early-access customers.<sup>[1][4]</sup></p><h2 id="isPasted">Why it matters</h2><p>NVIDIA's 2026 800 VDC white paper credits solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) and hybrid breakers with ultra-fast DC clearing. For 125 A branches in initial systems NVIDIA accepts molded-case circuit breakers (MCCBs), though clearing in up to about 20 ms needs feed redundancy or extra hold-up time, and expects SSCBs to take over.<sup>[5]</sup></p><p>In a December 2025 paper, Siemens and NVIDIA engineers put SSCB interruption below 0.5 ms, at the cost of conduction heat, and hybrid breakers, which conduct through metal and interrupt with a parallel semiconductor, at 1 to 3 ms, because the semiconductor waits until the contact opens far enough not to break down.<sup>[6]</sup></p><p>PS-150 is aimed at that wait. If the 50 µs figure holds, a hybrid could approach SSCB interruption times with what Atomic Machines calls a small bypass, provided fault current rises slowly enough.<sup>[1][6]</sup> Atomic Machines' 2024 patent application, written for smart breakers in building load centers, describes a MEMS relay about 10 mm across that opens in 50 µs or less, noting that a MOSFET bypass's conduction energy grows with the cube of opening time when fault current rises linearly.<sup>[7]</sup></p><p>A comparable surface-mount part, rated on different terms, is Menlo Micro's MM9200 MEMS switch: 10 A, 300 V minimum breakdown, 6 mΩ typical and 10 µs maximum switching time, in a preliminary brief. Before designing PS-150 in, an engineer needs its actuation drive, its endurance under fault openings and the temperature basis of its 150 A rating, which set the driver, the reliability case and the thermal design. Californian company Atomic Machines announced a surface-mount relay it says opens to 1,500 V isolation in 50 µs, for 800 V DC data centers.

Micro-machined 150 A relay targets the slow step in hybrid DC breakers

<h2 id="isPasted">What was announced</h2><p>OmniOn Power, a power conversion manufacturer, announced four QODN bus converters as the second generation of its Osprey family: <strong>non-isolated, regulated modules that convert a 40 to 60 V rack supply to a 12 V intermediate bus</strong>.<sup>[1][2]</sup> The QODN108, QODN136, QODN167 and QODN217 deliver 1.3, 1.6, 2.0 and 2.6 kW in a 58.4 × 36.8 × 14.5 mm quarter brick, the same outline as the first-generation QODE modules launched in February 2025, which stopped at 2 kW. OmniOn claims a peak efficiency of up to 98.5%, "high, flat efficiency curves across their operating band", and up to 1% better efficiency than the QODE generation.<sup>[1][3]</sup></p><h2>Why it matters</h2><p>The 2 kW QODN167 reaches a typical 98.0% at 54 V input, full load and 25 °C ambient, against 97.1% for the first-generation QODE167. Our calculation (loss = output power × (1/efficiency - 1)) puts dissipation at about 41 W for the QODN167 and 60 W for the QODE167, about 32% less. The QODN136 and QODN108 come out about 30% and 33% below the QODE136 and QODE108. At 20% load and 54 V the QODN167 curve reads about 97.5% against the QODE167's 96.2%, a wider gap.<sup>[4][5][6][7][8][9]</sup></p><p>The 2.6 kW QODN217, at a typical 97.8% at 54 V and full load, dissipates about 58 W by the same calculation, close to the QODE167's 60 W. Derating curves agree: with a 25.4 mm high heatsink and about 3 m/s airflow at 54 V, the QODE167, QODN167 and QODN217 hold full current to roughly 46 °C, 65 °C and 47 °C ambient respectively.<sup>[2][4][5]</sup></p><p>Flex Power Modules' BMR352, a competing regulated, non-isolated quarter brick announced in November 2024, is rated 2 kW continuous in the same outline, at a typical 97.5% at 54 V and full load, specified at a 25 °C module reference temperature where OmniOn uses 25 °C ambient. Advanced Energy's NDQ1600, a 1.6 kW module of the same type launched in August 2025, reaches 96.8% at full load and 50 V input.<sup>[10][11][12][13]</sup></p><p><strong>All four QODN models are most efficient at 51 V</strong>, then 54 V, among the 40, 51, 54 and 60 V curves OmniOn plots, over most of the load range. Those are the two nominal power shelf outputs in the Open Compute Project's Open Rack V3 (ORv3) specification.<sup>[14]</sup> At the 40 V minimum and full load, the QODN167's typical efficiency falls to about 95.8%, below roughly 97.5% for the QODE167 and 97.9% for Flex's BMR352. <h2 id="isPasted">What is the announcement</h2><p>Toshiba Electronic Devices &amp; Storage Corporation <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260930980943/en/Toshiba-Launches-Dual-Channel-Standard-Digital-Isolators-that-Contribute-to-Lower-Power-Consumption-in-Industrial-Equipment">announced the DCL32xx00</a> series on 1 October 2026: four dual-channel digital isolators for industrial equipment. Toshiba says the DCL32xx00 draws 0.2 mA per channel (typical) at 1 Mbps and carries data at up to 25 Mbps.<sup>[1]</sup></p><p>The DCL320C00 and DCL320D00 have two channels in the same direction. The DCL321C00 and DCL321D00 have one channel each way, the arrangement a UART link needs. The C00 and D00 suffixes set the default output state, low or high. All four use magnetic coupling, are rated for 3,000 Vrms isolation, run from 2.25 V to 5.5 V between -40 °C and 125 °C, and come in an 8-pin narrow SOIC package.<sup>[1]</sup></p><h2 id="isPasted">Why does it matter</h2><p><strong>The DCL32xx00 is the two-channel version of the quad-channel DCL34xx0B series</strong> that Toshiba introduced in mid-2026, with the same per-channel current, data rate and timing.<sup>[2][3][4]</sup> Toshiba  described the technique in the DCL341x0B, the first DCL34xx0B parts, as a proprietary edge transmission method.<sup>[4]</sup> Edge-based schemes signal across the isolation barrier when the input changes state, so supply current falls with the data rate.<sup>[5][6] </sup>Toshiba's 150 Mbps DCL54x01 isolators use on-off keying, where a carrier crosses the barrier for as long as the input holds one logic state, an approach that draws more supply current at low data rates.<sup>[5][7]</sup></p><p>At 1 Mbps and 3.3 V, the DCL320C00 draws 0.16 mA and 0.26 mA on its two supplies. The DCL520C00, Toshiba's 150 Mbps dual-channel isolator in the same package and pinout, draws 5.7 mA and 2.7 mA, about 20 times more per channel (calculated from the datasheet figures). At 25 Mbps the DCL320C00 draws 3.1 mA per channel against about 5 mA for the DCL520C00. The DCL32xx00 gives up speed and transient immunity in exchange: its guaranteed common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) is 30 kV/µs against 100 kV/µs for the DCL52xx00 series, and its maximum propagation delay at 3.3 V is 52 ns against 19.1 ns.<sup>[2][8]</sup></p><p><a href="https://www.ti.com/product/ISO7021" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Texas Instruments' ISO7021</strong></a>, a two-channel isolator with one channel each way, draws 120 µA per channel at 1 Mbps and 3.3 V with no load, where the DCL32xx00 draws about 180 µA. At rest the ISO7021 needs 4.8 µA per channel against roughly 130 µA for the DCL32xx00, but the ISO7021 tops out at 4 Mbps.<sup>[2][6]</sup> In the same 25 Mbps class, <a href="https://www.analog.com/en/products/max12930.html"><strong>Analog Devices' MAX12930</strong></a>, a two-channel 3,000 Vrms isolator in a narrow SOIC, draws 0.39 mA per channel at 2 Mbps and 0.91 mA at 25 Mbps (3.3 V, no load, calculated from the datasheet figures). At 5 V the same sum gives 0.3 mA per channel, and the 3.3 V datasheet maximums give 0.42 mA.<sup>[2]</sup> Each channel carries signals one way only. Toshiba's release names I2C as a use for the DCL320C00 and DCL320D00, but I2C needs a bidirectional channel, and standard unidirectional isolators provide one only with external components.<sup>[1][10]</sup> The DCL52xx00 datasheet describes reinforced insulation with a 10,000 Vpk surge rating.
