Overview
The NXP Semiconductors S32K344 Motor Control Development Kits are designed for evaluating high-power 48V motor control systems. The kits can prototype 3- and 6-phase PMSM and BLDC motors. They allow rapid prototyping for e-bikes, e-compressors, starter generators, and many other applications.
Extensive Hardware for Prototyping Different Motor Types
The NXP Semiconductors S32K344 motor control development kits can be used for prototyping a wide range of motors, including 3-phase and 6-phase AC, BLDC, and PMSM motors. The robust hardware is built around the powerful 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M7 S32K3 microcontroller. The kits are available in two options:
MCSXTM4CK344 - Control one 3-phase PMSM or BLDC motor
MCDXTM4CK344 - Control two 3-phase motors or one 6-phase PMSM/BLDC motor
The kits can sustain high-power applications, handling power rates of 3.8kVA to 5.7kVA. The hardware supports up to 170A peak current. The kits come with multiple built-in sensors, including encoders, Hall-effect sensors, and resolvers, and support sensorless motor control.
The power supply section integrates various voltage and current sensors to measure:
Battery voltage
Phase voltages and currents
DC Bus voltage
Overcurrent protection
BEMF voltage
To further enhance circuit safety, the development kit features an isolated CAN PHY and a flyback converter for 48V and 12V applications, and includes temperature measurement instrumentation for added safety.
The NXP Semiconductors S32K344 Motor Control Development Kits support a wide range of interfaces, with on-board support for isolated and non-isolated CAN interfaces. There is onboard Ethernet used as a socket connector, an S32K3 debug interface that includes serial communication, LIN, and a JTAG debug interface.
Robust Software Support Tools with Ready-to-Use Motor Control Applications
The development kits are supported by software tools to allow rapid and seamless prototyping. It offers field-oriented control (FOC) with field weakening for sinusoidal PMSM motors. These tools are available as ANSI C examples, particularly for non-Autosar applications.
Moreover, it comes with the S32 Design Studio S32 platform IDE and S32K3 Real-Time Drivers featuring example software for instant prototyping. The kit also includes application tuning and variable tracking tools like the FreeMASTER and Motor Control Application Tuning.
Easy-to-Install Modular Design
The motor development kit comes in a modular design, featuring three separate boards that connect together via simple connectors. The boards include:
S32K344 Controller board
The Adapter board for 3-phase and 6-phase applications
Power Stage Board features two sets of terminals for three-phase motors.
The kit also offers the option to include two fans, mainly used for prototyping high-power applications. Additionally, it contains mounting screws for easy installation.
These modules provide sufficient support for prototyping a wide range of applications, including the automotive sector for evaluating hybrid EVs and electric pumps. Moreover, it supports prototyping industrial applications for BLDC- and PMSM-based systems.
