Overview

The MAX17523A is a versatile current limiter designed to protect electronic circuits. It has a miniaturized form factor to provide robust integrated system protection for industrial-grade systems. The device on a wide input voltage range of 4.2V to 36V, and can limit current up to 1A.

It provides adjustable overvoltage and overcurrent protection, programmable current limit thresholds, and selectable fault response modes (auto-retry, latch-off, continuous). Additionally, it offers reverse current and thermal shutdown protection. The device is ideal for applications requiring robust power supply management and fault protection.

Adjustable Protection Features Tailored for Industrial-Grade Systems

The MAX17523A current limiter comes from a series of adjustable protection devices. The device can protect systems from negative and positive input faults of up to 40 Volts.

When it comes to voltage protection, the MAX17523A features the following protection categories:

  • Overvoltage Protection - Adjustable overvoltage protection ranges from 6 to 36 volts.

  • Undervoltage Protection - Adjustable Undervoltage protection ranges from 4.2 to 24 Volts

Moreover, the device provides additional protection with optional external resistors. These resistors ensure overvoltage and Undervoltage lockout in case the input voltage exceeds the threshold voltage. As a result, it adds a protective layer for sensitive devices such as sensor systems, factory sensors, etc. The adjustable lockout features disable the device until the input voltage falls inside the safe voltage range preventing damage to the connected circuitry from abnormal voltages.

Likewise, the MAX17532A provides a programmable current limiting option for up to 1A. It works in three modes, i.e.

  • Autoretry - Stays off during the retry period

  • Latch-off - Turns and stays off.

  • Continuous Fault Response - Limits the current continuously in this mode

Hence, in any overcurrent event, the device ensures safety for the connected circuitry by shutting down after 21ms. Moreover, the device provides reverse current protection and thermal shutdown when it reaches +150 degrees Celsius.

Seamless Operation with the MAX17523AEVKit

The MAX17523A ensures flexibility and robustness for industrial systems. For instance, its wide range of input supply allows it to integrate with low-power and high-ower systems. While there are some basic resistor and capacitor configurations to setup the device, the MAX17523AEVKit makes it easier to install and operate the current limiter just like a plug and play device.

The kit provides various jumper configurations for straightforward current limiting and features additional protection mechanisms like TVS and Schottky Diodes at the input and output terminals respectively.

With its programmable output response, the MAX17523A becomes a flexible option for various applications like weighing and batching systems, process analytics, sensor systems, etc.
