Overview

The Omron Industrial Automation E3AS-HF ToF Laser Sensors are time-of-flight (ToF) photoelectric sensors designed for distance-based detection of objects up to 6 meters. They use a high-sensitivity photodiode to detect low-reflectivity targets, enabling reliable sensing of dark objects on dark backgrounds, as well as shiny or curved surfaces. A dedicated sensing algorithm supports stable detection at steep or irregular angles, improving performance in complex industrial environments.

The sensors are suitable for continuous level detection tasks, including stack height monitoring, overflow detection, and run-out detection of opaque materials. A configurable 4 mA to 20 mA analog output allows integration into positioning and control systems. The series includes spot beam and diffuse beam variants for different surface and object conditions. The additional features include dual-channel outputs, IO-Link communication for remote configuration, and IP67/IP69K protection ratings, supporting operation in harsh industrial conditions.

Features of E3AS-HF ToF Laser Sensors

The Omron E3AS-HF ToF Laser Sensors use time-of-flight technology for distance measurement and object detection. They support the detection of low-reflectivity targets and provide analog and digital outputs for industrial applications. Let’s go through its features in detail:

Time-of-Flight Sensing and Detection Range

The E3AS-HF series operates using time-of-flight (ToF) measurement principles to determine object distance up to 6 meters. This enables non-contact detection for positioning, level monitoring, and presence sensing across extended ranges. The sensing approach supports stable operation in applications where sensors must be placed away from moving equipment or hazardous zones. The wide-angle characteristics of the sensors enable flexible mounting, allowing engineers to incorporate them into designs at almost any angle.

High-Sensitivity Detection of Challenging Targets

The sensors incorporate a high-sensitivity photodiode to detect low-reflectivity targets. This allows reliable sensing of dark objects on dark backgrounds, as well as on curved and highly reflective surfaces. The detection capability extends to materials that are typically difficult for conventional photoelectric sensors, supporting consistent performance across varying surface conditions.

Advanced Algorithm for Angular Stability

A dedicated sensing algorithm enables detection at steep or irregular angles, maintaining signal stability even when targets are not aligned directly with the sensor. This characteristic supports flexible mounting positions and simplifies integration into existing systems with alignment constraints or retrofitting requirements.

Output Configuration and Communication

The E3AS-HF sensors provide dual-channel digital outputs along with a configurable analog output of 4 mA to 20 mA for continuous measurement applications. IO-Link compatibility enables remote configuration, parameter monitoring, and integration into industrial communication networks, supporting centralized control and diagnostics.

Mechanical Variants and Environmental Protection

The series includes spot-beam variants for detecting small objects or for through-hole applications, and diffuse-beam variants for uneven or curved surfaces. The anti-fouling coating of the sensors prohibits dust, dirt, and fog from accumulating on the lens and affecting detection. The sensors are designed for industrial environments, with IP67 and IP69K protection ratings and Ecolab certification, supporting operation in conditions involving moisture, dust, and cleaning processes.

Applications

The Omron E3AS-HF ToF Laser Sensors are used in industrial automation and manufacturing for non-contact distance measurement, object detection, and positioning tasks. In continuous-level detection, they monitor stack height, overflow conditions, and material runout in processes involving solids or opaque liquids. Their ability to detect low-reflectivity, shiny, or curved surfaces supports reliable operation across varied production environments. The sensors are also suitable for harsh environments where exposure to dust, moisture, or cleaning processes is common, leveraging their high protection ratings to maintain stable performance in demanding industrial applications.
