Overview

The Synaptics SL1680 Embedded IoT Processor is an AI-native system-on-chip designed for Android™ and Linux® edge computing applications. It integrates a quad-core 64-bit Arm® Cortex®-A73 CPU subsystem with an NPU delivering up to 7.9+ TOPS for local machine-learning inference. An integrated GPU supports 2D and 3D graphics, concurrent execution, and general-purpose compute workloads. Multimedia resources include a secure image signal processor, 4K video decoding and encoding, display processing, and audio acceleration for far-field voice and keyword detection.

The processor supports LPDDR4 and LPDDR4x memory, eMMC 5.1 storage, Gigabit networking, PCIe, USB, UART, SPI, SDIO, GPIO, and ADC interfaces. Video and audio connectivity includes MIPI CSI-2®, MIPI DSI®, HDMI®, and I2S/TDM. Security functions include a Base Crypto Module, memory scrambling, integrity checking, a true random number generator, physical attack mitigation, and on-chip OTP storage for protected embedded operation.

Features of SL1680 Embedded IoT Processor

The SL1680 integrates application processing, AI acceleration, multimedia engines, and security functions within one SoC. Its interfaces support connected vision, audio, display, and industrial edge-computing applications. Let’s go through its features in detail:

Multicore Processing and AI Acceleration

The SL1680 combines a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A73 CPU subsystem with an NPU delivering up to 7.9+ TOPS. The CPU handles operating systems, application logic, and system management, while the NPU executes neural-network inference locally. This architecture supports multimodal AI workloads without continuous dependence on cloud processing.

Graphics, Video, and Display Processing

Integrated GPU supports 2D and 3D graphics, concurrent execution, and general-purpose compute operations. Multimedia accelerators decode AV1, H.265, H.264 MVC, VP8, VP9, and MPEG-2 formats. The processor supports simultaneous 2160p60 decoding and 1080p60 encoding, with QDEO® post-processing for display and video pipelines.

Imaging and Audio Capabilities

The processor includes a secure image signal processing engine for camera-based applications and vision analytics. MIPI CSI-2, MIPI DSI, and HDMI interfaces support camera and display integration. Audio resources provide far-field voice processing, keyword detection, decompression, and post-processing, with I2S and TDM interfaces for external audio components.

Security and Protected Operation

Security functions include a Base Crypto Module processor, memory scrambling, integrity checking, a true random number generator, and physical attack mitigation. 32Kbit on-chip OTP area supports device-specific data and configuration storage. These mechanisms help protect boot processes, memory contents, communications, and application data in connected IoT systems.

Memory, Connectivity, and Power Management

The SL1680 supports LPDDR4 and LPDDR4x-3733 external memory and includes an eMMC 5.1 controller. Connectivity interfaces include Gigabit networking, PCIe, USB, SPI, SDIO, UART, GPIO, and ADCs. An always-on power domain supports multi-protocol wake-up events while the system management unit coordinates processor and peripheral power states.

Applications

The Synaptics SL1680 Embedded IoT Processor is used in smart appliances requiring local AI, voice processing, graphics, and network connectivity. In home security gateways, it supports multi-camera processing, video analytics, and protected data handling. Industrial control systems use its edge inference, interfaces, and multimedia engines for monitoring and human-machine interaction. The processor also supports digital signage and interactive displays requiring 4K video and graphics acceleration. In point-of-sale systems, it enables secure transaction interfaces, camera processing, and connected applications. Scanners use its image signal processor, AI accelerator, and high-speed peripheral interfaces for image acquisition, recognition, and document-processing workflows.
