Overview

The Sensirion SEN6x Air Quality Sensors platform integrates multiple sensing functions into a single compact module for indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring. It measures up to nine environmental parameters, including particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10), temperature, relative humidity, VOC index, NOx index, CO2, and formaldehyde. The system incorporates pre-integrated algorithms for compensation and index calculation, reducing the need for complex multi-sensor integration and calibration.

The platform uses a MEMS-based SPS6x particulate sensing unit that combines optical detection, signal processing, and algorithms to determine particle size distribution and mass concentration. A modular architecture allows different variants (SEN62 to SEN69C) to support varying parameter combinations while maintaining a consistent form factor. The sensors operate over defined ranges for particulate matter, gases, and environmental conditions. The digital I2C interfaces enable integration into embedded systems for continuous air quality monitoring and analysis.

Multi-Parameter Environmental Sensing

The SEN6x platform measures multiple indoor air quality parameters within a single module, including PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10, temperature, relative humidity, VOC index, NOx index, CO₂, and formaldehyde. This integration enables simultaneous monitoring of particulate matter, gases, and environmental conditions without requiring separate sensor components. The system supports comprehensive IAQ analysis for applications requiring combined particulate and gas sensing.

Integrated Algorithms and Compensation

The platform incorporates pre-integrated algorithms for temperature and humidity compensation, as well as VOC and NOx index calculation. These onboard processing capabilities reduce the need for external calibration and signal conditioning. The algorithms process sensor data to provide standardized outputs, enabling simplified system integration and reducing firmware complexity in embedded applications.

MEMS-Based Particulate Sensing Architecture

MEMS-based particulate matter sensing unit forms the core of the SPS6x platform. It integrates the optical light source, detector, signal processing, and algorithm within a compact structure. The system analyzes scattered light to determine particle size distribution and mass concentration. A patented sheath-flow design enhances dust protection and supports stable long-term operation under continuous monitoring conditions. 

Modular Design and Variant Flexibility 

The SEN6x series follows a modular approach with multiple variants (SEN62 to SEN69C), each supporting different combinations of sensing parameters. All variants share an identical mechanical form factor, allowing a single hardware design to accommodate different configurations. This approach simplifies production and enables scalability across different product tiers with varying sensing requirements. 

Electrical Interface and Operating Characteristics 

The sensors utilize an I²C digital interface for communication with host systems. They operate within a temperature range of -10°C to +50°C and provide defined measurement ranges for particulate matter, gases, and environmental parameters. The platform supports continuous operation exceeding 10 years, with optimized airflow channel geometry and reduced power modes, including single-shot particulate measurement for energy-efficient operation.

Applications

The Sensirion SEN6x Air Quality Sensors are used in air quality control systems to monitor particulate matter, gases, and environmental conditions in real time. In smart homes and building automation, they support ventilation control, demand-based airflow regulation, and indoor comfort optimization. The sensors are integrated into variable air volume (VAV) controllers to adjust airflow based on measured air quality parameters. In room sensors, they provide localized monitoring for temperature, humidity, and pollutants.
