Overview
The PocketBeagle 2 is a tiny yet powerful single-board computer, an upgrade to the original PocketBeagle. Designed for developers, students, and hobbyists, it's an ultra-compact and low-cost platform ideal for IoT devices, robotics, and educational projects. While maintaining the simplicity and flexibility of its predecessor, the PocketBeagle 2 offers enhanced performance and expanded features. Its small size and low power consumption make it versatile for prototyping and larger-scale deployments in embedded systems development.
Powerful Arm Cortex Microprocessor that Handles High-End Applications with Ease
The PocketBeagle 2 is powered by a robust microprocessor featuring a dual 64-bit Arm Cortex-A53 subsystem capable of speeds up to 1.0 GHz. This dual-core cluster includes a shared 512KB Level 2 cache with Single-Error Correction, Double-Error Detection (SECDED ECC), ensuring data integrity. Each Cortex-A53 core also has its own dedicated 32KB Level 1 data cache with SECDED ECC and a 32KB Level 1 instruction cache with parity protection. Beyond the application processors, the chip also integrates a single-core Arm Cortex-M4F microcontroller unit that can operate at up to 400 MHz and includes 256KB of SRAM with SECDED ECC.
Further enhancing its capabilities, the microprocessor incorporates a dual-core Programmable Real-Time Unit Subsystem (PRUSS) running at up to 333 MHz, ideal for time-sensitive applications. A dedicated device/power manager handles system power and resources efficiently. Security is also a key feature, supporting a secure boot and a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) to protect sensitive data and code.
Robust Board with External Connectivity and Ergonomic Design
The PocketBeagle 2 is equipped with 512MB of LPDDR4 SDRAM running at 3200MHz, providing ample memory for demanding applications. It features storage options via microSD card slot that supports both 1.8V and 3.3V cards. Moreover, it provides debugging options through a 3-pin 3.3V JST-SH 1.00mm UART debug port compatible with RPi debug probes, as well as a 10-pin JTAG TAG-CONNECT footprint.
Visual feedback is provided by a power LED, a battery-charging LED, and four user-controllable LEDs. The board facilitates user interaction via a power button and a user/boot button. It has a compact design spanning just 55 x 35 mm and weighing just 12.7 grams. Hence, making it a pocket-friendly option for embedded system developers.
Power management is handled by a TPS6521903 PMIC, ensuring efficient and stable power delivery. Power can be supplied via a USB-C connection or through the cape header VIN (5V @ 1A). A rich set of expansion options is available through 72-pin headers, including power and battery I/Os, high-speed USB, 8 analog inputs, 52 digital I/Os, and a variety of digital interface peripherals.
