Overview

The EVAL-CN0581-EBZ is a standalone USB Type-C Power Delivery (PD) module that adds USB -C power sink capability to projects and devices. It replaces bulky power jacks with a modern USB-C port, supporting voltages from 5V to 20V and adjustable currents between 0.5A and 5A using DIP switches. This board includes features like surge protection and automatic power negotiation, making it useful for prototyping and development. The EVAL-CN0581-EBZ simplifies adding USB-C PD to the projects with its user-friendly design and accessible breadboard-compatible headers. The evaluation board is best used for applications including smart speakers, power tools, wearables, cameras, various Internet of Things (IoT) devices, VR headsets, gaming consoles, and even drones and robots.

EVAL-CN0581-EBZ USB Type-C Power Delivery Module Features

The EVAL-CN0581-EBZ replaces bulky traditional power jacks with a universally compatible USB-C connector.  Users can configure the voltage (5V, 9V, 15V, or 20V) and current (0.5A to 5A) using DIP switches on the board, ensuring precise power delivery for the specific needs. The evaluation board automatically sets the voltage and current mode based on the DIP switch configuration, simplifying the setup process.

The power delivery module prioritizes safety with its integrated hot-swap surge stopper featuring an ideal diode. This ensures safe connection and charging for devices and project prototypes. The board has different protection features, including overcurrent, short circuit, input over/undervoltage, output overvoltage, and reverse current protection.

The EVAL-CN0581-EBZ board is capable of handling large bulk capacitors (up to 1000µF) for power-demanding projects. It also includes an enable output pin for precise control over power delivery. The inclusion of an optional I2C interface enhances its functionality, allowing for greater control over the power delivery process.

Designed specifically with prototyping in mind, the EVAL-CN0581-EBZ features breadboard-friendly 2.54mm pitch pin headers for seamless integration into the projects. The standalone USB Type-C PD controller functionality eliminates the need for complex circuitry, making it a user-friendly and efficient solution. The evaluation board empowers developers and engineers to integrate efficient USB Type-C™ power delivery into different projects.

Getting Started with EVAL-CN0581-EBZ Evaluation Board

Follow these steps to get started with the Power Delivery Module:

Setting Up the Module:

1. Power Selection: Choose your desired voltage (5V, 9V, 15V, or 20V) and current (0.5A to 5A) based on the project's needs.

2. Power Selection: Locate the P15 connector on the module. Using the provided two-pin jumper, select the onboard 3.3V logic voltage by placing the jumper across the appropriate pins.

3. Connection: Connect the EVAL-CN0581-EBZ output to the device using either the P11 connector (output socket) or the P14 pin header.

Powering Up:

1. Charger Selection: Use a USB-C charger capable of delivering the voltage and current selected.

2. Connecting the Charger: Connect the chosen USB-C charger to the EVAL-CN0581-EBZ input.

3. Power Verification: With a multimeter set to voltmeter mode, measure the voltage between VBUS_OUT and GND on the module. This reading should match the selected voltage setting.

Applications

EVAL-CN0581-EBZ USB Type-C Power Delivery Module is suitable for various industries and devices. Its ability to support various voltage and current settings makes it ideal for powering consumer electronics, including smartphones, laptops, and tablets. Beyond personal devices, it's equally suited for industrial applications where reliable and adjustable power supply is critical, such as automation control systems, portable medical equipment, and IoT devices.
