Indie game studio Odd Meter used Xsens to create animations for <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt32277412/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Indika</a>, a story-driven PC and console game. Surreal adventure game Indika is set in a Russian convent in the 1800s. The player, a nun who hears demonic voices, meets an escaped convict and searches for her cure. In this unique experience, players must explore their surroundings, search for clues, and solve puzzles to progress. Behind this concept is Dmitry Svetlov, founder and Creative Director of indie game studio <a href="https://odd-meter.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Odd Meter</a>. Indika’s development took over four years, and the small team of just 14 needed an efficient way to capture character animation. Creating Indika“We wanted this game to shine a light on 19th-century Russia in a unique and compelling way,” explains Dmitry. “For me, that involved a lot of cinematic shots, high-quality environment building, and photorealistic cut scenes. We want the player to feel as though they are truly there in this dystopian, unnerving setting.”Much of the gameplay involves exploring the convent and its surroundings. From his own observations and background in biomechanics, Bora knew the real story was in the data. The key was to uncover the body's hidden strategy for managing the load. “Given my background in biomedical engineering, I wanted to collect objective data on how the body redistributes movement when carrying a load,” explains Bora. “The question wasn't just if our movement changes, but how. Which joints become restricted, and which have to compensate to maintain our gait?”For the experiment, Bora and the research team recruited a cohort of 20 young adults. The experimental protocol took place in the university's biomechanics lab, where each participant walked on an instrumented treadmill under four distinct conditions: with and without a loaded backpack, on both a flat and a five-degree inclined surface. To ensure consistent conditions, each backpack was weighted to 12% of the participant’s individual body mass.Electromyography and XsensTo answer this kinematic question, the team turned to Xsens, provided by <a href="https://www.sense4motion.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sense4Motion</a>. The results provided a surprising confirmation of the kinematic findings. With the spine braced and rigid, the core back muscles actually showed a decrease in activation. The body was relying on the stiff posture revealed by Xsens, not extra muscle force, to manage the load.“The data we received from the Xsens Analyze software was incredibly consistent and reliable,” says Bora. “We could clearly see the reduction in spinal ROM and the corresponding increase in hip rotation, giving us a high degree of confidence in our analysis.”Planning for the futureBora and the team at Bahçeşehir University successfully identified the "stiff spine, mobile hips" strategy that healthy young adults use to carry backpacks. Their research also showed that this compensatory pattern occurs on both flat and inclined surfaces, highlighting a consistent response to load. But how can this knowledge be used to improve well-being?The team has already begun work on a new study to test how different backpack designs and strap lengths affect this biomechanical trade-off. Bora aims to use the data to identify the least restrictive type of backpack, which could help advise manufacturers on more ergonomically sound designs.“We have used Xsens for a long time at Bahçeşehir University, and will continue to do so,” Bora concludes. “It provides the detailed kinematic data we need to carry out insightful and accurate research.

Filming took place in multiple locations, including three Atlanta volume stages: Trillith Studios, Shadowbox Studios, and Tyler Perry Studios. Each robot in the show would have its own unique attributes as well, and was played by many actors, so several mocap sessions were required.“We were using up to four Xsens Link suits at a time,” says James Martin, CEO and Technical Director at Actor Capture. “And if needed, we could scale up to six. Having so many suits enabled us to create large amounts of data simultaneously. It also helped the actors in their performances, because they could interact with each other in real time.”Combined with a 70-camera optical setup, the Actor Capture team had an enormous volume of data to work with. Real-time visualization of mocap data in <a href="https://www.movella.com/motion-capture/xsens-mvn-animate" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xsens Animate </a>helped break that down, monitoring the actors’ progress instantaneously to ensure everything was translating correctly to CG. It also gave them a crucial advantage when it came to the unique attributes of the characters.Tailored movements“We created all shapes and sizes of robots,” continues James. “To help us visualize those differences during production, we created body dimension templates specific to the actors and characters, then applied them directly in the post-processing software.”Having these pre-built templates was essential for the accuracy of the motion capture actors’ movements. James and the team needed to see if the real-life performance would translate into a robotic one, especially considering their unique proportions. From there, Actor Capture could easily make directorial changes according to their findings. The Electric State was also a very dynamic film in terms of production, with consistent creative iterations of the robot designs. One minute, a character traveled on wheels. After a quick change, they moved on spider-like legs. Despite the complexity of these movements, the motion capture remained pinpoint accurate.“Thanks to Xsens, we could do all stunts with a high degree of accuracy, making an easier job for the post-production studios who would work on the CG later down the line,” says James. “We could also increase the motion capture range beyond the typical 300 feet by using network mesh bubbles and 5G signals. That really helped us when it came to some of our more daring stunts.”On-set expertiseWorking alongside James and Actor Capture was Anthony Romero, Senior Product Manager at Movella, who provided support with the technical aspects of the project. Dominik recognised the importance of excellent motion tracking and capturing to enable artists to create authentic, intimate in-game live shows which led to the discovery of Xsens, and their array of Xsens motion capture products. &nbsp;The main reason the team decided to adopt and implement Xsens technology was the overall data quality it provided, and how it went above and beyond its competitors' capabilities. Dominik says, "we saw the VR headset market was crashing and started to investigate screen based virtual environments to develop and create performances. We found Xsens to have excellent positional tracking with stellar graphics, and there was no magnetic interference. All round, it was a much better, more reliable suit than the others."Thanks to the capabilities of Xsens motion capture technology, Yabal has delivered a vast variety of live shows and with its infinite scalability, this number is set to increase. Currently in pre-series A, the team's next steps are to expand their presence globally and fully embed Xsens technology within their framework and infrastructure.&nbsp;Getting up close and personalVirtual environments provide a new level of intimacy around artist engagement, something that's unattainable in the physical world. By capturing authentic facial movements with a device as simple as an iPhone, and realistic body movements with the Xsens suit, and displaying these in real-time, the user experience is elevated and makes individuals feel much closer to the artist. The goal here is to combine entertaining live shows with engaging gameplay.&nbsp;This is why magnetic interference is important. Magnetic interference, which happens around vital pieces of equipment such as speakers and distorts the animation. This distortion removes this newly created level of intimacy and ruins the immersive experience. Sadly, this is prevalent in many pieces of motion capture technology, and Movella is the only inertial motion capture company that has managed to overcome this.Furthermore, this is why the reliability of the suit is essential. With live performances and real-time entertainment, there is no luxury of time. Creators and performers can't wait for debugging so the technology needs to be reliable and work first-time. When the technology is unreliable, as with magnetic interference, the immersive, intimate nature of the experience is ruined, and there is a risk of reputational damage, leading to a loss of audience going forwards. &nbsp;When discussing the process for performances, Dominik explains how there is no blueprint, and every show is a different, fun, creative, and–at times–experimental process. Live means live.&nbsp;Reflecting on some of his favorite performances Dominik comments, “one of our first ever shows was with Aetna, an upcoming German band consisting of two people playing live synthesizers and drums. We created their avatars and, using Xsens motion capture suits, they delivered a virtual, real-time live performance. The reception, and reaction, from the fans was fantastic."Another great performance was from European DJ, Hugel, in the midst of the pandemic. It was his birthday and all his previous plans fell through.
