They wanted Project Vesperi to feel less like a typical video-game cutscene and more like cinema, with real actors delivering real performances. That ambition collided with the reality of student life: a tiny team, no dedicated capture stage, a borrowed equipment window, and almost no prior motion capture experience between them.Hill first proved out the tone of the game by building a concept teaser in Unreal Engine using animations he found online, simply to show people what the project could become. The teaser did its job, the professors got behind it, and one animation professor pointed the pair toward a motion capture suit that was sitting unused for the summer. There was no class on how to operate it, no in-house games pipeline for it, and no second suit to pair actors together. The team had a single suit, a cast of five or six actors, and an 83-page script to capture."Nobody on the team had any experience with motion capture. Hill taught himself the system from the Xsens documentation and tutorial videos, then ran his own tests at home and across different locations to dial in strap placement and connection quality. By the time the capstone class started in the fall, the plan was to walk in on day one with all the mocap already done, so there would be no question about whether the game could be made.Because the Xsens system is inertial and portable, the team did not need a permanent stage. They shot inside the Fowler School of Engineering's bookable research pods, folding back a partition wall to open up a long corridor with enough runway for the script's running and action beats. The portability also let them keep all the sound in one place: lavalier mics went on the suits, a boom operator worked the room like a film set, and most of the dialogue players hear in the game was recorded live on the day of the shoot rather than replaced later."We wanted voiceover-booth quality sound in an interior space. Most of the dialogue you hear in the game was recorded with the mocap on the day, as opposed to going back and replacing it later. In six days, the studio captured roughly 83 pages of script using that single suit. Going through 83 pages of motion across multiple characters by hand was not feasible at the team's size, and other mocap solutions they had looked at demanded heavy manual correction on nearly every take. The Xsens HD reprocessor removed that bottleneck entirely."That was the incredible part. The Xsens HD reprocessor was a game changer. Any of the jitters or pops or things we would normally have to go back and clean up were suddenly fixed. I set it up and ran it on our school laptop, came back, and all the mocap was polished. If a character needed more room to run, the team could go outside. From there, the wider animation pipeline could support the final character and weapon work.For impact work, the team also planned around the performer and the suit. If a performer needed to drop onto a crash mat or roll, they adjusted the setup to protect the hardware and keep the movement safe. The value was that these moments could be seen, reviewed, and solved during the session.“There was nothing really specific to Xsens where we couldn’t do something,” Ace says. “We would always see it anyway. Her early on-camera music content performed well, but it felt limiting in bringing her full vision to life. She wanted more than singing on camera. The French indie studio, consisting of around 30 people at the peak of production, aimed to blend cinematic presentation with turn-based gameplay in a way that felt immersive and emotionally grounded.Rather than treating cinematics as separate moments between gameplay sections, the team wanted the entire experience to feel cohesive. Character movement, subtle performances, camera work, and pacing all needed to support the emotional tone of the story. The ambition was not simply to create cutscenes, but to build scenes that felt closer to film production than traditional in-game cinematics.As Tristan Fleury, Cinematic Animator at Sandfall Interactive, explains: “We wanted something very similar to cinema. Not a typical video game cinematic, but something that feels like a movie.”That cinematic ambition became one of the defining creative pillars of the project. At the same time, the reality behind development looked very different from a large AAA production. For larger studios, this type of production often depends on dedicated optical motion capture stages, extensive capture crews, and highly structured production schedules.For Sandfall, that approach would have created too much complexity.The studio needed a motion capture workflow that could fit naturally into an agile indie development environment. VFX Supervisor Victor Perez built landscapes and filled them with people for the feature film, Naples to New York. On a short timescale, he found a way to do this efficiently and with high-quality results, winning two accolades at the David di Donatello Awards.ChallengeThe film was set in an imagined version of New York City. For this, Victor Perez stepped in – a VFX Supervisor on major projects such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Batman, and Harry Potter.Building New YorkTo help visualize a fantastical vision of New York, Victor and his team undertook extensive crowd-building, architectural work, and prop integration using a small team of just 167 artists over the course of six months. The post-production team was responsible for 536 shots across the film, providing visuals for traffic, buildings, and people. A significant focus was on the creation of New York itself. “Fellini had never been to New York,” Victor explains. “So it had to look fantastical and somewhat dreamlike. It also helped that I’ve never visited the city.”New York scenes were shot in Trieste, Italy, reflecting Fellini’s not-quite-accurate idea of how the American city looked. “I created a merged landscape by using the architecture of Trieste and overlaying 1940s New York iconography,” says Victor. “But the real challenge was filling the streets with people.”<img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1770811045580-Naples+To+New+York+-+People+2.png" style="width:100%px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" />Creating crowdsNew York is a famously busy city, so the team used a mixture of native filming and VFX to bring scenes to life. These could then be applied directly to the scanned extras, making the crowd appear dynamic and bustling. “Using Xsens is like using a camera,” says Victor. “Once you’ve set it up, you can get as much content as you need.” Inertial motion capture enabled the pair to create different postures, gaits, and gestures with a high level of precision. “We wanted our characters to move fluidly like in real life, so motion capture was the perfect solution,” Victor continues. “We could also evaluate our progress in real-time to see if we were getting the right movements and amend where needed.”After a day of recording themselves, Victor and the team quickly transferred the motion capture data to post-processing software the next morning. They must uncover the secrets behind this operation by entering doors that lead to different environments – each of which acts as a clue to the overarching storyline. For a game studio consisting of just 36 developers, creating a project of this size was no mean feat. “Before even starting to produce the game, we had years of previsualization to find the correct tools we needed,” explains Ömer Faruk, Motion Blur’s studio director. “The democratization of game development thanks to tools like Unreal Engine and Metahuman Animator was crucial for us.”The team built multiple environments including subways, science labs, and high streets to act as different game levels. That’s not to mention the sheer realism of the visuals, which easily compete with notable AAA games such as Portal and Detroit: Become Human. <img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1744792834935-black+state+motion+blur+link+suit.png" style="width:100%px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" />Xsens and MMA Not many game studios can say they’ve used real fighters to animate their combat sequences, but Motion Blur can. And it’s thanks to the studio’s Head Game Designer and CEO, Kadir Demirden, whose idea became integral to the game’s animation. “We used Turkish MMA cage fighters, Murat Kazgan and Kaan Kazgan,” explains Kadir. “It was a pretty hard watch, but the results we got were outstanding.” After hours of motion capture, Motion Blur had over 110 fight animations to use within the game. “Not a single piece of <a href="https://www.movella.com/products/motion-capture/xsens-mvn-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xsens equipment</a> was damaged in this process,” Ömer mentions. “It was a brutal fight, but the technology remained in one piece.” The nature of the <a href="https://www.movella.com/products/motion-capture/xsens-mvn-animate" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xsens setup </a>meant that the fighters could perform naturally without any obstruction. The studio used Unreal Engine to achieve this goal, noting the tool’s accessibility and ease of use paired with the <a href="https://www.movella.com/integrations/unreal-engine" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xsens live link</a> as crucial features for smaller game development teams. The studio continues to pioneer high-quality gaming in Turkey, with Black State in the late stages of development.In terms of the animations, Ömer and the team wanted to give the game a realistic edge. Using MMA fighters did just that, resulting in gritty combat scenes and a whole library of motions to be used during gameplay. “We needed accuracy for our animations, and Xsens provided that,” Ömer explains. “We needed a lot of combat animations, and using a mix of MMA fighters and inertial motion capture helped us achieve this.”

Xsens Goes Cage Fighting: Motion Capture for Black State

The exploitation of renewable power sources is an essential response to the climate crisis. Solar and wind energy are the giants of the renewable world, but their output is unpredictable and intermittent. From one week to the next, it is difficult to forecast reliably how strongly the wind will blow or how brightly the sun will shine. This is a problem for national electricity grid operators, which are responsible for dynamically balancing the energy supply with the load.&nbsp;There is, though, a renewable energy source which is naturally very predictable: tidal power. The relative distances and positions of the sun, moon and Earth all affect the size and magnitude of the Earth’s two tidal bulges. At a local level, the magnitude of tides is influenced by the shape of the shoreline, as well as by weather conditions. Because the tides are driven by planetary movement, their timing can be precisely predicted, enabling power system operators to plan confidently for a tidal power generator’s contribution to the grid.&nbsp;This helps explain the growing interest in Orbital Marine Power, a UK-based innovator in tidal power generation. Succeeding where many tidal turbine manufacturers have failed, Orbital has developed a unique floating structure with turbines on each of two retractable legs. Its system off the coast of Orkney in Scotland generates a nominal 2MW output which helps the UK’s national grid to reduce its reliance on fossil fuel power sources.&nbsp;The north Atlantic is an unforgiving operating environment for electrical and electronics systems, however – and this is why Orbital relies on a robust <a href="https://www.movella.com/products/sensor-modules" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xsens MTi </a>inertial motion sensor to keep the floating turbine structure stable. &nbsp;The <a href="https://www.movella.com/products/sensor-modules" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MTi motion sensor</a> is incorporated in the system as part of a Gable IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) from Gable Technologies, which created an EtherCAT interface to integrate Xsens sensors seamlessly into industrial applications such as Orbital’s tidal power generator. This combination takes advantage of the accuracy of Xsens sensors, ensuring reliable performance in even the harshest conditions.Free from the seabed: the key Orbital innovationThe breakthrough that the Orbital design team made came from its observation of previous attempts to fix tidal turbines to the seabed: many companies that adopted this approach ran out of money, strained by the massive cost of hiring construction vessels and building a fixed underwater structure.&nbsp;The floating structure of the Orbital O2 generator eliminates these construction costs, and uses a simpler mooring system to hold the hull in place. On each side of the hull is a retracting leg featuring a turbine: this part of the structure can be lowered to the depth at which the most energetic tidal flows are to be found, or raised to protect the structure when extreme weather is forecast. &nbsp;<img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1740729489392-Picture1.jpg" style="width: 100%px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">For the turbines to work effectively, the structure needs to be stable both in its geoposition, and in its attitude: excessive movement – roll or pitch – reduces the flow through the turbines, and thus affects total power output. It must maintain this stable position in extremely challenging conditions: floating in a narrow channel between islands, where the tidal flows are particularly strong, the Orbital hull is exposed to wind, saves, salt water ingress, and sunlight.&nbsp;Stable station keeping– maintaining a fixed position and attitude – in all conditions calls for an array of sensors, including a Doppler sensor to measure the speed of the tidal flow, load gauges on both legs, a GPS satellite sensor for geopositioning, and various weather sensors such as anemometers.&nbsp;Alongside these, the job of continuously measuring the hull’s pitch and roll, as well as low-frequency vibration, is performed by an Xsens MTi motion sensor. MTi sensors’ accuracy and performance are renowned – these devices are used in many applications which measure motion with millimetre precision, more than enough for the Orbital application.&nbsp;Angel Rua Santaclara, Orbital’s Powertrain Manager, was convinced that the performance of the MTi sensor would meet the tidal power generator’s needs, backed by the comprehensive magnetic calibration capability provided in the MT Software Suite from Movella. &nbsp;<img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1740729511338-Picture2.jpg" style="width: 100%px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib">But he says that equally important was the sensor’s ability to operate reliably in the harsh marine environment. He says: ‘The interior of the hull is dry by design – this facilitates repair and maintenance. But inevitably a floating marine structure is always going to be exposed to salt water and a humid atmosphere, and so every electrical and electronic component we use has to be rigorously specified to withstand these harsh conditions.&nbsp;‘That’s why Orbital’s first instinct was to use the specialist motion sensors that are marketed to the oil and gas industry for use in rigs and drilling platforms. But we found that they are over-specified for our requirements – for instance, they can handle operation at great depths. That meant they were also hugely expensive. We were glad to discover the <a href="https://www.movella.com/products/sensor-modules" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MTi motion sensor</a> family, because it gives us the performance we need. The Gable IMU has an IP67-rated enclosure, which means that it can survive the damp atmosphere in the generator and repeated contact with salt water. The sensor has operated reliably ever since it was installed in our generator off the coast of Orkney.’Promising future for tidal power generationAngel Rua Santaclara says that having proved the feasibility of tidal power generation with the installation of the O2, the company is preparing to scale up its operation, building more generators for use in UK waters and elsewhere. He says, ‘Tidal power has its part to play in a carbon-free future for the electricity grid, and it can be deployed anywhere that has strong tidal flows. Our design, including the sensor systems for controlling the motion of the hull, is now proven, and we are looking forward to offering our design all around the world.’&nbsp;

Motion Capture Accelerates Uganda’s Game Development IndustryA tale that has evolved since 2004, Sunjata is the project that will take the Ugandan video game industry – and then the world – by storm. But first, the small team at Klan Of The Kings needed the tools to bring their vision to life.&nbsp;Comic artist and African folklore lover, Ronald Kayima, had a sizeable task in front of him when transforming his story into a video game. Sunjata immerses players in a world of African mythology, ancient tales, and stunning visuals, designed to celebrate the continent’s illustrious history and educate those who haven’t had the opportunity to learn about it before. In an Assassin’s Creed-style game, warrior protagonist Kaar Menelik fights against the gods to save his community.&nbsp;A brief historyThrough founder Ronald’s comic book creations, he met Hannington, a talented 3D artist who took to Sunjata at first sight. From there, with expert advice from collaborators Hans de Heer and Phillip Mukasa, the burgeoning team transformed the plotline into a cinematic, photorealistic game.&nbsp;Without a well established game development industry in Uganda, finding the resources to produce a AAA game was a challenging feat for the team to face. The gaming industry and Ugandan game developers have been virtually non-existent – until now. Sunjata is up to the task of setting the tone for an industry that has yet to break out.Part of the development team’s goal is to establish Uganda as a player on the global games stage. To do that, they need to push for the highest quality content possible, and have it reach outside of the country. “Every milestone we hit, I see it spark a certain level of change in our industry down here,” explains Ronald.&nbsp;Challenges and opportunities Klan Of The Kings opted to use Unreal Engine to build Sunjata, with Ronald learning the software from YouTube videos. The consistent tutorials eventually led him to an Xsens case study demonstrating the use of motion capture in game design.&nbsp;Upon using the motion technology, Ronald found the process “very user-friendly and very easy to implement” into Sunjata, making a small team’s large workload a little lighter. “The process also allowed us to create some high-quality, cinematic trailers,” adds Ronald. “That gave us the polish we need to get noticed.” The natural next step was to fully integrate the Xsens tool into Klan of Kings’ current and future projects.Because there is no established Ugandan game development industry, the team felt that they had to get it right the first time. The pressure to stand out from the crowd and prove themselves was immense, leading to development staying under the radar so it “can really be looked at from a Western, developed point of view,” Hans van Linschoten, entrepreneur and collaborator, explained. Due to some perceived prejudices, the team had to prove themselves to the larger games industry. Finding a sense of unity in the project was proving difficult, due to a lack of belief in the project and the entities in their own skills, resulting in a smaller team and a whole lot of work in front of them.&nbsp;An abundance of dataMotion capture helped Ronald and the team transform the game's animated elements, giving Sunjata a true AAA feel. While the game is currently around halfway through development, the team has access to tools that will help them to capture 3D motion free of needing a stage or cameras. This, paired with the Xsens demonstration videos and support, gives the team the ability to develop high-end content despite the lack of resources in Uganda.&nbsp;Previously difficult-to-execute tasks were made easier by having the tools to digitally replicate human motion, posture, and gait to uplift their animations and gameplay to AAA status competitive with the Western industry. As the game is completely original and high-concept, anything they wanted to add to the game was now simple due to the use of motion capture sensors and instant digital data transfers.What’s next?Sunjata is halfway into development, with the second half predicted to accelerate thanks to Unreal Engine and Xsens.&nbsp;Klan of the Kings remains a small team of four permanent members, but Ronald notes that the amount of talent he comes across in Uganda is immense, and “there’s not enough high-level content coming out yet.” With that, Ronald and the team wish to “push that agenda and really make sure that content does come out of the country on a high level.”&nbsp;With Xsens, Klan of Kings was able to deliver high-quality gameplay that matched their expectations.
