Image sensor company OMNIVISION announced the OG05D

The OG05D is a 5 MP (2592 × 1944) stacked, backside-illuminated global shutter image sensor with 2.2 µm pixels. Target applications for the OG05D include barcode scanners, factory automation, compact AI cameras and humanoid robots, in particular devices that collect robot training data. OMNIVISION calls the OG05D the industry's first 2.2 µm, 5 MP global shutter high dynamic range (HDR) sensor purpose-built for industrial machine vision.[1][2][3]

The OG05D offers single-exposure dual conversion gain (DCG) HDR and three-exposure HDR, both at 60 fps, plus a linear mode at up to 146 fps. OMNIVISION says OG05D samples are available now, with mass production planned for Q4 2026.[1]

Why it matters

Single-exposure DCG reads one exposure at two conversion gains, high for dark areas and low for bright areas.[4] A voltage-domain global shutter pixel must hold both samples until readout.[5] OMNIVISION engineers reported such a pixel at 2.2 µm in 2023, fitting the four storage capacitors that single-exposure DCG needs onto the ASIC wafer of a two-layer stack. The pixel's dynamic range was 69 dB with single-exposure DCG and 85 dB with dual exposure, at room temperature (no product named).[6]

Among OMNIVISION's earlier 5 MP machine-vision sensors, the OG05C has DCG HDR at 60 fps and reaches 120 fps at 10 bits, but uses 3.45 µm pixels in a 1/1.443-inch format. OMNIVISION lists the 2.2 µm OG05B, launched in 2024, at 60 fps with 10-bit RAW output and no HDR mode. The OG05D combines DCG HDR at 60 fps with the OG05B's pixel size, and its linear mode reaches 146 fps (bit depth not stated).[1][3][7][8][9][10]

The OG05D shares its 2592 × 1944 array of 2.2 µm pixels, 1/2.525-inch format and near-identical package size with the OX05C, an automotive in-cabin monitoring sensor OMNIVISION launched in October 2025. OMNIVISION lists only one HDR mode for the OX05C, three-exposure at 60 fps.[1][3][11][12]

Sony and STMicroelectronics sensors with 2.25 µm pixels take other routes to HDR. Sony's 3.2 MP IMX900, a global shutter sensor for industrial use, sets multiple exposure times within each four-pixel unit. STMicroelectronics' 5.1 MP VD1943 and VD5943 for machine vision and robotics combine global and rolling shutter modes; ST says rolling shutter enhances dynamic range, and the VD5943 offers split-exposure spatial HDR.[13][14][15]

OMNIVISION says the OG05D's single-exposure HDR reduces the motion artifacts of multi-exposure HDR, which matters for scanners reading labels on moving parcels or robot cameras passing from shade into daylight.[1] Designs with room for the OG05C's larger format and C-mount optics could already use DCG HDR at 5 MP; the OG05D brings it to a smaller format.[3][7]

Moving a design from the OG05B to the OG05D means a board change. The OG05D uses a 56-pin CSP (89 pins on the OG05B's CSP versions), lists only MIPI output (the OG05B adds parallel DVP), and runs from 2.9 V analog and 1.15 V or 1.2 V digital supplies (OG05B: 2.8 V and 1.2 V).[3][9][10][16]

OMNIVISION gives the OG05D's NIR quantum efficiency as above 55% at 850 nm and above 35% at 940 nm with no color filter named, close to the monochrome OG05B's 58% and 36% from 2024.[1][17]

As of this writing three OG05D figures that would decide a design-in remain unpublished: absolute power consumption, shutter efficiency (106 dB for the OG05B) and the dynamic range of each HDR mode.[8]
