Overview

The DS28S60 is a cryptographic coprocessor designed for embedded systems, providing robust security features. It offers hardware-accelerated cryptographic functions including ECDSA, ECDH, and AES 128 with GCM, ensuring data confidentiality, integrity, and authentication. Its ChipDNA™  technology generates unique device identifiers, enhancing security against cloning.

With secure non-volatile memory for key storage and a simple SPI interface, the DS28S60 is a versatile solution for protecting sensitive data. It operates at 3.62 volts with a minimalist current of around 100nA making it a viable option for low-power portable and battery-operated operations in IoT and other resource-constrained applications.

Robust Security Solutions for Low-Power Applications

The DS28S60 is a specialized chip that protects sensitive data in embedded systems. It offers a range of cryptographic functions, including encryption, decryption, and digital signatures, to ensure data confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity.

To safeguard against tampering and counterfeiting, the device incorporates ChipDNA technology, which creates a unique digital fingerprint for each chip. This, combined with active monitoring for intrusion attempts, provides robust security.

Furthermore, the DS28S60 simplifies integration into various applications with its fixed command set, no-firmware requirement, and C-source code examples. The chip also includes secure storage for cryptographic keys and certificates, along with a high-speed interface for efficient communication with the host microcontroller.

The DS28S60 coprocessor can operate in a wide temperature range of -40 to +105 degrees Celsius with minimal power consumption. Its compact size of 3mm x 3mm and low-profile package make it ideal for space-constrained applications.

Powerful Hardware-Based Cryptographic Features

The DS28S60 coprocessor works in unison with an external microcontroller. It can communicate in multiple modes via SPI communication protocol. The coprocessor primarily performs three major cryptographic functionalities to safeguard data. These functions include:

  • Decryption - Accelerates decryption processes through its hardware-based implementation of AES-128. It enables rapid and secure transformation of encrypted data into its original form. It offloads decryption tasks from the host processor, so it enhances system performance and reduces power consumption. As a result. It becomes a suitable option for applications where processing power may be limited.

  • Encryption - Provides robust encryption capabilities to safeguard sensitive data. It supports AES-128 encryption with GCM mode, providing both confidentiality and integrity for transmitted data. The coprocessor also incorporates a secure random number generator (TRNG) to generate high-quality random numbers essential for cryptographic key generation and other security protocols.

  • Digital Signatures - Facilitates digital signature generation and verification through its hardware-accelerated ECDSA implementation. The coprocessor can efficiently compute the elliptic curve operations required for creating digital signatures. These signatures serve as cryptographic proof of the authenticity and integrity of data or documents. When verifying a signature, the DS28S60 performs the necessary calculations to confirm the signature's validity and the corresponding public key, ensuring data integrity and non-repudiation.
