Overview

Using computer technology in creating simulated environments defines virtual reality—a new way of improving efficiency in education, therapy, training, and other industries for better results desired at a lesser cost.

VR eases visualization of written contents and processes, even furthering exploration of every aspect and detail while reducing real-world distraction. It likewise promotes a more hands-on experience for higher engagement and increases student attention despite limited time, space, facilities, and equipment.

Similarly, in training industries VR eliminates the high cost of setting up a physical training facility that includes equipment, materials, and utilities. It also removes costly mistakes in using real equipment during training, as well as potential hazards during the process. With VR training, there is no need for instructor presence as the program will contain all instructions and guidelines via the code. Even in therapy, VR proves functionality in psychological treatment, rehabilitation, and social presence.

Offering a fully immersive VR experience is VIVE Pro, built for pro-grade VR with optimized ergonomics that deliver exceptional comfort. It boasts a precise 360-degree controller, realistic graphics and directional audio, and a headset room-scale tracking on top of HD haptic feedback for realistic actions and movements in the virtual world.

Design

High Resolution AMOLED Screens

VIVE Pro has high-resolution 3.5” diagonal screens using Dul AMOLED with a 90-Hz refresh rate, 615 PPI (2880 x 1600), 110 degrees field of view, and 1440 x 1600 pixels per eye.

High Resolution 3D Spatial Audio

The device integrates 3D spatial sound on the Hi-Res certified removable headset and headphones, delivering a truer-to-life immersive audio experience. The powerful amplifier can drive high-impedance headphones, while the dual microphones are capable of active noise cancellation and enabling the Alert and Conversation Modes.

Optimized Ergonomics

VIVE Pro provides ergonomic comfort with optimized features from the top down. The evenly distributed headset weight gives an optimal center of gravity. The headset and head strap, soft padded with foam, works for a broad range of head sizes and is adjustable for varying pupillary distances. For eye relief, the Adjustable Eye Comfort Setting (IPD) allows lens distance adjustment, increasing 24% of the face gasket area for lowered stress. These features make VIVE Pro perfect for extended VR sessions.

Room-scale VR

One can use VIVE Pro while standing, sitting, or walking around the allotted room-scale station through the SteamVR Tracking System. Using four SteamVR Base Station 2.0 grants area coverage of up to 10m x 10m and 5m x 5m for the included two base stations. VIVE Pro has a sub-millimeter precise tracking over large-scale tracked areas, making it fit for multiuser VR.

Controller

VIVE Pro has the SteamVR Tracking 2.0 for its sensors, with inputs including a multifunction trackpad, grip buttons, dual-stage trigger, and system and menu buttons. It can run for approximately 6 hours and is chargeable via the micro-USB charging port. It has no minimum space requirement and can cover an area of up to 10m x 10m.

Minimum Computer Specs

VIVE Pro works well on an equivalent or better processor than the Intel Core i5-4590 or an AMD FX 8350 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 for graphics. The computer must have 4GB of RAM or more, a Display Port 1.2 or newer, and a USB 3.0 or newer. It works on Windows 7 and above versions, giving the best results when used in Windows 10 with dual front-facing cameras. Although for Windows 7, an additional driver must be installed to use VIVE Pro’s dual camera. For the best visual experience, use NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 1070/Quadro P5000, AMD Radeon™ Vega 56, or graphics of a higher version.

Virtual Reality Is At Our Doorstep!

Creating and modifying a virtual reality environment just got a lot easier thanks to software being released today by Imverse, an EPFL spin-off. The secret behind Imverse’s program, which works much like a photo editor, is a three-dimensional rendering engine based on 3D pixels called voxels.
