RF design software opens up to customer-owned AI agents
Keysight's Advanced Design System 2027 lets external LLM agents run Python in design sessions over the Model Context Protocol
Keysight design software
What is the announcement
Keysight Technologies announced on 6 October 2026 that engineers can connect their own AI agents to its Advanced Design System (ADS) 2027 and RF Circuit Simulation Professional through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.[1] MCP is an open protocol for linking large language model (LLM) applications to tools and data. ADS is Keysight's EDA platform for high-frequency and high-speed digital design; RF Circuit Simulation Professional, its RF circuit simulator and optimizer, also runs inside Cadence Virtuoso ADE and Synopsys PrimeWave Custom Compiler.[3][4]
Keysight says the servers give an agent documented skills (markdown files telling it how and when to do a task) and tools that execute specific RF work consistently, after which Keysight simulation validates the agent's output.[1][5]
Why it matters
Keysight argues that LLMs cannot read schematics and layouts consistently, so ADS converts designs and recorded workflows into Python. Keysight lists both features for ADS 2026 Update 2, released in March 2026; the MCP link is what ADS 2027 adds.[1][6][7][8]
Agents can drive RF tools without vendor-side AI integration. In an August 2026 preprint from Ruhr University Bochum and TH Köln, a coding agent (Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 model in Claude Code) drove ADS 2024 through netlists, CST Studio Suite for full-wave simulation and KiCad for PCB layout to design an active GNSS L1 antenna in about two hours; all results are simulated.[9]
Keysight's ADS MCP server gives agents a supported way into the design environment: eight tools to attach to a running session or start a headless one, summarize the workspace, execute Python inside ADS, and search Keysight's workflow guides and generated Python API reference.[10] The Bochum agent instead worked from Python-interface notes it had written in earlier sessions.[9] The ADS MCP server contains no language model, and this first release mainly targets design-environment APIs; agent control of Data Display, the ADS data-analysis tool, is not yet guaranteed.[10][11]
Other design software has similar MCP access. MathWorks MATLAB MCP server's agent toolkit includes an RF skill for RF Toolbox and RF Blockset.[12][13] Closer to ADS, Synopsys and Ansys released an open-source alpha MCP server for Ansys Electronics Desktop that lets an agent build and solve HFSS, Circuit and HFSS 3D Layout designs.[14] Cadence promotes its own "AI super agents", describing task agents in its Virtuoso Studio RF platform or Microwave Office software that would orchestrate MMIC power-amplifier design through EM sign-off.[15] Keysight's December 2025 Chat and Copilot assistants, built on fine-tuned models, remain separate add-ons.[6][16]
The fit is best for teams that already script ADS in Python and run an approved LLM; teams without one can use Chat and Copilot.

A simulator confirms only what the agent chose to simulate. Testbench choices, corner coverage and the match between simulated model and routed layout still need an engineer's judgment. In the Bochum work, engineer reviews caught idealizations such as a junction simulated as a crossing but routed as a tee.[9] Because execute_python runs code inside ADS, the MCP specification's safety principles apply: tools are treated as arbitrary code execution, and hosts must obtain explicit user consent before invoking any tool.[2][10] Adoption needs an approved LLM, a policy for agents that run code in design sessions and Keysight's licensing terms for the ADS MCP server; the first release's design-environment scope then limits how much of a flow an agent can automate.
