Overview

The Microchip Technology WBZ451HPE Curiosity Board is a development platform designed to help developers and embedded system designers create and prototype Internet of Things (IoT) applications, particularly those focused on wireless connectivity.

The board is built around the Microchip WBZ451 module, which seamlessly integrates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and a microcontroller all in one package. This makes it a versatile board for a wide range of IoT projects, providing a convenient platform for the development of logic-heavy and low-level hardware detailed applications including industrial automation, weather monitoring, asset tracking, wearable electronics, and smart home devices.

Seamless Connectivity Options with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Communications

The Microchip WBZ451HPE Curiosity Board is designed specifically for prototyping IoT applications, primarily with wireless connectivity.  It uses the Microchip WBZ451 module, integrating:

  • Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) allows the board to connect with standard Wi-Fi networks for cloud-connected IoT devices

  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE 5.2) for low-power short-range communication with smartphones, sensors, and other battery-powered applications.

  • An Arm Cortex-M4F microcontroller handles data processing, communications, and control over wireless interfaces.

The combination of Wi-Fi and BLE provides flexibility for diverse use cases, allowing, for instance, a device to use BLE for local configuration and then Wi-Fi for cloud data transmission.  The specifics of the wireless implementation, including antenna details and software support, are best found in the official Microchip documentation.

The board also features a selection of onboard peripherals like LEDs, buttons, and sensors, along with expansion headers for connecting external modules.  Also, there are development tools and software libraries to simplify programming and utilizing the wireless features.

Flexible On-board Peripherals and Expansion Options

The WBZ451HPE Curiosity Board presents a flexible development environment with wide-ranging on-board peripherals. It features a set of LEDs, buttons, temperature, and light sensors, and communication interfaces to connect external sensors and actuators, supporting rapid prototyping and development.

Moreover, the board provides additional headers and connectors to ensure expansion options. Hence, developers can connect analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital-to-analog converters (DACs), and communication interfaces that aren’t primarily built-in with the board. The board is also equipped with the PICkit On-board 4 (PKOB4) for advanced debugging.

The board comes with a standard kit of software tools and libraries from Microchip for quick programming and testing. It also includes an IDE for seamless programming. It features programs supporting BLE and Zigbee applications. Hence, it finds its applications in a wide-ranging field of robotics, IoT devices, smart homes, automotive control, and many others.
