Overview

While virtual reality systems simulate environments for immersive experiences in general, the current VR market is highly focused on entertainment-based applications, with companies like Sony and Valve having their own dedicated products for gaming.

Yet, Meta's entry into the VR market came with a different approach. Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the metaverse expands VR applications to more than entertaining, having a clear focus on work-related tasks and enterprise customers.

Released in October 2022, the Meta Quest Pro is Meta's most advanced headset for virtual and augmented reality applications. This is a premium product aimed at professionals who want to explore the full potential of virtual creation and collaboration.

Compared to the Quest 2, Meta's entry-level VR headset, the Quest Pro offers additional augmented reality capabilities, in which the experiences between the virtual and real world are merged. To that end, the Quest Pro comes with improved cameras and sensors for high-resolution and full-color passthrough features.

Design

Overall Design

The Quest Pro's headset focus on user comfort. Weighting 722 g, it is noticeably heavier than the Quest 2 (503 g), but it makes up for it by housing the battery at the rear section for better weight distribution. The rigid adjustable headband has soft paddings on the front and back sections and includes built-in speakers with positional audio.

The headset also offers fully open peripheral vision for the user, although the included partial light blockers can be mounted for blocking some of the external light coming from the sides. For a fully immersive experience, though, Meta recommends the full light blocker accessory purchased separately.

Performance

The Quest Pro offers higher performance compared to the Quest 2 with its 12 GB RAM and a Snapdragon XR2+ processor that delivers 50% more power according to Meta. It also ships with 256 GB of storage as stock.

Optics and Display

The Meta Quest Pro comes with an improved pancake lens for a reduced optical stack, resulting in a much thinner front-face section. This setup also boasts a continuous interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment of 55 to 75 mm for more clarity and less eye strain. The field of view (FoV) is 106° horizontally by 96° vertically.

The display uses quantum dot LCD technology with an 1800x1920 resolution per eye. It has 37% greater pixels-per-inch resolution and a 1.3x larger color gamut compared to the Quest 2. The Quest Pro also has a local dimming backlight system for better contrast.

Controllers

Each Touch Pro Controller has 3 individual cameras for spatial tracking and a dedicated Snapdragon 662 mobile processor. It offers a more ergonomic form factor with the improved TruTouch haptic feedback and finger tracking.

The controllers come with built-in rechargeable batteries instead of the AA battery system of the Quest 2. The charging is done through metal pin connectors via the included charging dock or the controller charging cable only.

Tracking

While the Touch Pro Controllers use built-in cameras for positional and hand tracking, the headset has five internal sensors for face expression tracking. This allows the user's digital avatar to mimic his facial expressions in real-time.

Charging and Accessories

The Quest Pro's charging dock serves both the headset and the two controllers at the same time. The headset can also be charged while functioning via its USB-C port and the included two-meter charging cable. There are no official battery life claims for the Quest Pro.

Besides the headset, the two Touch Pro Controllers, and the charging dock, the Quest Pro's accessories include a 45W USB-C power adapter, a controller charging cable, a headset charging cable, two stylus tips, two partial light blockers, a protective cover for the headset, cleaning cloths, and two wrist straps.
